It started with the wisdom of ancient healers and psychic doctors which gave way to the astounding scientific technologies, which have not ceased to amaze the modern world with the continuing discovery of cures and more sophisticated medical gadgetry.

Witch doctors and shamans divined the stars or uses animals to determine the causes of and also the cures for human illnesses. Herb doctors or other locally trained healers uses leaves and barks of plants and trees.

Medicinal plants have a scientific basis regarding their use. Medicinal plants are accessible and widely available in the Philippines.

Herbal Medicine

Be sure that the right kind of plant is used according to the intended purpose. Use the plant part suggested. Use according to the dosage and direction recommended. Use only one kind of medicinal plant at a time. Stop the use of the plant if there is any untoward reaction or if side effects occur.

Herbal Medicine Guidelines

If there are no signs of improvement after two or three administrations of the drug, consult a physician. In boiling the plants, use clay pots. Clean the pots very well before and after boiling the plant. Use only the prescribed part of the plant.

Indications: for cough and asthma Description: a shrub with five leaves per branch and grows to about five meters tall Adult: 6 tbsp. (fresh) 4 tbsp. (dried) 7-12 y/o: 3 tbsp. 2 tbsp. 2-6 y/o: 1 tbsp. 1 tbsp. Dosage: Divide the solution into 3 parts: 1 solution in the morning, noon and night.

Indications: for pains of the body Description: plant that crawls and smells minty with four-cornered, branching green leaves. (rough & wrinkled) Dosage: Divide the boiled solution into three parts. One in the morning, noon and night. Squeeze the fresh leaves and place on the painful part of the body.

Indications: swelling, diuresis, antiurolithiasis Descriptions: the shrub is about three meters high with hairy leaves. Dosage: Divide the boiled solution into three parts. One in the morning, noon and night. Squeeze the fresh leaves and place on the painful part of the body.

Indications: stomach ache Description: the shrub grows to about five meters tall; leaves are small, smooth and dark green Dosage: Divide into 2 parts and drink one part every four hours.

Indications: for ascaris Description: the crawling shrub grows to eight meters tall; flowers are red, pink or white. Fruits are small and has nuts. Preparation: use newly-opened, mature and dried nuts Administration: eat the seeds two hours after dinner. Dosage: Adult: 8-10 seeds 7-12: 6-7 seeds 6-8: 5-6 seeds 4-5: 4-5 seeds

Indications: for cleansing of wounds, mouth infections and swollen gums Administration: clean wounds with the solution two times a day. Preparation: clean thoroughly and chop leaves. Then boil 2 glasses of leaves in 4 glasses of water on a low fire.

Indications: infected skin, skin irritation and scabies Preparation: squeeze enough leaves Administration: apply the juice of the leaves on the affected parts twice a day.

Indications: to lower uric acid; for arthritis or gout Preparation: clean leaves thoroughly and boil 1 glasses of leaves in two glasses of water for 15 minutes. Divide into three parts and take three times a day.

Indications: to lower cholesterol level Preparation: may be saute, boiled or mixed with vinegar Administration and Dosage: eat two cloves of garlic with meals three times a day.

Indications: diabetes mellitus (mild insulin-dependent) Preparation: clean the leaves thoroughly and chop. Measure two cups of leaves in 2 glasses of water. Boil for 15 minutes on low fire. Drink glass three times a day before eating.

Indications: for eye wash Preparation: boil water and add three frozen leaves. Cool and filter. Sampaguita flowers

Indications: for otitis media Preparation: heat 1-2 fresh leaves. Crush to extract the juice. After cleaning the affected ear of pus, drop juice into ear once or twice a day.
