THE NATURAL ORDER HYPOTHESIS

BY : NUR SYAHIRAH ANIS WARDAH KWAN PEI LING MUHAMMAD HUSNI

DEFINITION
According to Krashen, learners acquire parts of language in a predictable order. certain grammatical structures are acquired early while others are acquired later in the process.

CONCEPT
This natural order of acquisition occurs independently of deliberate teaching and therefore teachers cannot change order of a grammatical teaching sequence.

APPLICATION FOR TEACHING

We acquire the rules of language in a predictable order

the teachers should be aware that certain structures of a language are easier to acquire than others and therefore language structures should be taught in an order that is conducive to learning. Teachers should start by introducing language concepts that are relatively easy for learners to acquire and then use SCAFFOLDING to introduce more difficult concepts.

So how to apply The teacher must provide clear directions to SCAFFOLDING minimize student confusion. in teaching?

The teacher must clarify the purpose of tasks and assignments so students are aware of why they are expected to be completed by them; involve students in their own learning process! Must be clear about assessments so students can complete their tasks as successfully as

possible

Point students to good sources so they can supplement their learning. Reduce uncertainty, surprise, disappointment by being clear about as much as possible and providing the students with as much help as they need Use visuals and graphic organizers to help clarify the instructions and expectations

Use mnemonic devices to help students

remember key concepts Provide examples of completed tasks to clarify

expectations and steps needed.

Dialogues activities

The teacher can prepare this activity to enhance the students ability to acquire the grammatical concept. Teacher can start by simple dialogues then try to move to the difficult and complex dialogue when the students are ready. If not, continue with this activity until the students really understand the grammatical structures taught by

the teacher.

CONCLUSION
Natural order hypothesis purposes certain grammatical structures are acquired early while others are acquired later in the process.
Its main concept is learners acquire parts of language in a predictable order.

It applies in teaching through scaffolding and dialogues activities.
