Damp Proof Course:

A layer which resist entry of water Prepared by several materials like motor, bituminous etc. Damp proofing in construction is a type of waterproofing applied to building foundation walls to prevent moisture from passing through the walls into interior spaces

GENERAL SPECIFICATION: DPC shall be 40mm or 2.5cm or 1 thick cement concrete 1:1.5:3 cement, sand stone, chips (10mm down) with admixture of water proofing compound. Percentage admixture shall be as per manufacture specifications but not less than 2% by weight of cement. Top surface should be double chequered and cured by pounding for 7 days.

DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
Materials Used Damp proof course shall consist of cement, coarse sand and stone aggregate of 1:1 :3 proportions with 2% of impermo or cem-seal, or Acco proof by weight of cement or other standard water proofing compound Flexible materials like hot bitumen, plastic sheets, bituminous felts, sheets of lead, copper, Mastic asphalt, and continuous plastic sheets

Lead: Lead for use as a DPC should weigh not less than 19.5kg/m2. Lead is an effective barrier to moisture and water Lead is durable and flexible and can suffer distortion due to moderate settlement in walls without damage Depth should be 100mm Copper: Copper as DPC should be annealed at least 0.25 mm thick

Copper is an effective barrier to moisture and water, it is flexible, has high tensile strength
Bitumen DPC: Bitumen DPC is reasonably flexible and can withstand distortion due to moderate settlement in walls without damage Bitumen is the material most used for DPC today because it is at once economical, flexible, reasonably durable and convenient to lay

Polythene sheet:
For use as a DPC should be black low density polythene sheet of single thickness.

Semi-rigid DPCs:
Mastic asphalt spread hot in one coat to a thickness of 13mm is a semi-rigid DPC impervious to moisture and water

Slates: two courses of slates laid breaking joint in cement mortar were used as a DPC, before the introduction of bitumen as a DPC. A slate DPC is little used today because of its comparatively high cost Bricks: Two or three courses of dense engineering bricks laid in cement mortar serve as an effective barrier to moisture. This type of rigid DPC is little used today because it is comparatively costly.

MIXING AND PROPORTIONING

Mixing shall be done in a masonry platform or in a sheet iron tray in the proportion of 1:11/2:3 by measuring with measuring boxes The cement is first mixed thoroughly with the water proofing compound to required quantity, and then mixed dry with the sand in the proportion of 1:1/2 The mixing shall be done by turning at least 3 times to give a uniform and homogenous concrete

LAYING:
Side form or shuttering of strong wooden batten of 2.5 cm thickness shall be fixed properly and firmly on both sides to confine the concrete so that the shuttering does not get disturbed during compaction and mortar does not leak through After two hours of laying the surface of concrete shall be made rough and chequered so as to get grip in contact . The DPC shall be laid in continuation in one day without any joints On removal of the shuttering the edges should become smooth without any honey combing

Curing
The damp proof course shall be cured by watering and kept wet for 7 days, and the construction of wall above may be started. The surface shall be cleaned and wetted before masonry is started.

TOOLS AND PLANT No special tools and plant are required unless it is a big project. It may use the same tools and plant as normal concrete work for slabs etc.

WORKMANSHIP
Surface to receive damp proof course shall be cleaned and carefully wiped to remove all dust, laitance etc No masonry work shall be commenced on freshly laid damp proof course unless it is cured for 48hours The damp proof course shall be laid to the full width of the walls and the edges shall be straight, even and truly vertical.

Measurements
The length and breadth shall be measured correct to a cm and its area shall be calculated in square meters correct to two places of decimal.
The depth shall not be less than the specified thickness at any section.

Rate
The rate is inclusive of the cost of materials and labour involved in all the operations described above except for the applications of a coat of hot bitumen and addition of water proofing materials which shall be paid for separately, unless otherwise specified.
