To test or measure someones global/general (overall) competence in a language Without any practicing or training

To assign or place student (test taker) into an appropriate class, level, or program. To define characteristics of each level of proficiency

To diagnose or identify someones strengths and weaknesses in term of the aspects of language. To provide any feedback for later instruction

Achievement Test

To measure the students progress or achievement related to the content of curriculum that have been carried out in the classroom

Language Aptitude Test

To predict someones success in future in learning any foreign languages.

Norm-Referenced Test
To show how a students performance compares to that of other test-takers Comparing to other test takers Give the test takers descriptive data that put them in the rank

Criterion-Referenced Test
To classify students according to whether they have met the established standards Comparing to the standard or criterion Give test takers feedback about their competence
