List everything you know about blood

Blood
Lesson Objective: Understand why blood is important and the different jobs of blood cells.

Lesson Success Criteria

Describe why blood is important Describe the different roles of blood cells in a table Explain how blood groups are determined

Why is blood important?

Carries materials to every cell in the body Takes away waste products Blood is a tissue (similar cells) Blood cells are suspended in a liquid called plasma Plasma is bodys main transport mechanism
Contains; dissolved glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, glycerol, vitamins, minerals, carbon dioxide, urea, hormones and many other chemicals

Lesson Success Criteria

Describe why blood is important Describe the different roles of blood cells in a table Explain how blood groups are determined

Task
Observe the slides under the microscope Make accurate scientific diagrams of the cells observed How many different types of cell can you see?

Observations?

3 Types Of Blood Cell

Red blood cell White blood cell Platelets

Red Blood Cells

What do you know already? Packed with haemoglobin Carries oxygen in the blood Have no nucleus Flattened discs with a large s.a. for diffusion

Oxygen picked up in lungs and carried to cells oxygen + haemoglobin oxyhaemoglobin

Anaemia- Caused by?

Due to lack of haemoglobin Deficiency of which mineral causes anaemia? Iron Can also be caused by excessive blood loss in menstruation

Low haemoglobin less oxygen to cells Less aerobic respiration less energy tired

White Blood Cells

Protect against disease What did you observe? Much larger than red cells Fewer numbers than red cells Two main types: - lymphocytes (produce antibodies) -phagocytes (engulf pathogens)

Platelets
Cell fragments needed for blood clotting Why does blood need to clot? Clots prevent blood loss Clots stop entry of pathogens and infection

Task
Produce a table of the different blood parts and their function:
Blood Part Red blood cells White blood cells Platelets Function

Plasma

Clotting- (Fibrinogen Fibrin)

Blood vessel damaged Platelets release enzymes causing a reaction Final reaction is soluble protein changed to insoluble protein Fibres produced trap blood cells and form clot

National Blood Service

Collects, screens, processes and delivers blood and blood products Blood is screened for disease and put in types Blood products separated Red blood cells- anaemia Factor VIII haemophiliacs Plasma burn victims

Blood Groups-Homework
4 groups A,B, AB and O (44%, 42 % , 10% ,4%) For a transfusion patients need the correct group Group O can be given patients of any group (Universal donor) Wrong group can be fatal

Find-out how blood groups are determined?
