(KATYA DES-ETAGES & TAUREAN ROYE)

Lyric Analysis

PLOT OF SONG
The title of the song translates to Hes coming home, which is also the chorus of the song sung by the female vocalist. Along with the ambient instrumental start, and the chorus we get the idea of a long awaited journey. We also get the picture of a relationship due to the lyrics that the male rapper says. We also get the idea that there is a problem between the couple, some sort of argument is presented. However we also are presented with a suggestion of an equilibrium. Referring to other peoples perceptions but them being in love (original equilibrium) , how this impacted on their relationship (disruption of equilibrium), the male partner going missing (recognition of equilibrium) and then him coming home back to her (new equilibrium). This gives us a clear narrative which will help us to build the foundations of a video on

(6 VOCAL RIFTS)
The song starts with six vocal rifts, this enhances the ambient, ethereal and slightly magical feel of the start of the song. It also is a convention often found in alternative hip hop in which artists mix beautiful sounding rifts overlapped with the rest of the song which is often a rap. This also means that we don t necessarily have to start with a vocal performance at the very beginning of our video, by starting with a instrumental we can slowly build the narrative of the story before the performance aspect has to come in. This is something that also is often found with alternative hip hop, videos are often abstract and the use of the instrumental allows us to have a chance to work on that. An example of this being XXYYYXX About You in which they build the visuals during the instrumental.

CHORUS: HES COMING HOMECOMING HOME (X2)

The chorus is sung by the female vocalist, the pace of this part of the song is extremely slow which is something we will have consider in our video as our editing will have to correlate with the speed of the song. This is also the main part of the song, a long awaited return, which is an aspect we need to use heavily in our visuals because it is what the plot revolves around. We also know the female singer is singing this part of the song which means we need to present it from her perspective, addressing him. The repetition of coming home also means a heavy reference is on the fact that she is waiting for him to come home, which gives us the idea that there is a relationship between the male and female within the song narrative. There is also a dubbed distorted voice overlapping hers which is something we can represent visually so it fits with the music, which is conforming to Andrew Goodwins theory in which he states there should be a correlation between the visuals and the lyrics.

YEAH, UGH, THEY ALWAYS SAID THAT WE WERE YOUNG, WERE GROWN ENOUGH.
This again reiterates the type of relationship which is something that may be important within our visuals, again referring to Goodwins theory of the lyrics correlating with the visuals found within the video. It also gives us a possible narrative, we know we need to cast young people to feature in the video in order for it to make sense with the lyrics. It may be something we want to refer to in the visuals, the feeling of unrequited love and this could be something we could build on throughout the visuals. The most famous story of unrequited love being Romeo and Juliet so Baz Luhrmann's interpretation may be of some interest or inspiration to us as he displays this theme in a creative way rather than something that may be called cringey, as it would not fit with the genre of music.

I CALL YOUR PHONE, I PHONE ENOUGH. AND YOU COMPLAIN, YOU MOAN ENOUGH. I KNOW ITS TOUGH. I KNOW ITS ROUGH .
When referring to the equilibrium stages, this would be the disruption of the equilibrium in which there is something wrong within the relationship, for example an argument. Another important part of this section of the lyrics is that by saying I call your phone, we realise that it is from the perspective of the male vocalist, this means that the video could correlate with this, however the genre we have chosen gives us the freedom to make the video abstract, it could be from his perspective, hers or an over viewing, all-seeing, omniscient perspective. Though the instrumental and the pace of the song is slow, the short punchy lyrics build up a faster pace, this could be reflected in the editing of the video.

YOU SAT ON MY BED AND YOU OPENED UP. AND I WISH YOU DIDN'T, CAUSE I KNOW THIS STUFF. AND I TOLD YOU LIES AND I TOLD YOU BLUFFS .
You sat on my bed, this gives us an option for either a location or a shot type. We could set part of video within a house/flat/bedroom. Or we could just suggest the correlation between the visuals and the lyrics by a Birdseye view shot of over the shoulder shot of a couple sitting on a bed. Another important segment of the lyrics is the reference to lies and bluffs, this gives us the idea of deceit, which is something we could intertwine into our concept. Because we had originally discussed the idea of a trip with Alice and Wonderland theme, within the story there is loads of lies, mystery and enigmas which we could creatively relate to the lyrics.

AND I PUT IN WORK LIKE A FATHER OF COME. AND IT TOOK ME TWO YEARS, IT ONLY TOOK ME TWO YEARS.
The first line of this part of the lyric has a reference to two things, putting in work within the relationship, but also may have a sexual connotation. This is typical to find within this genre often the lyrics are of a sexual nature or use innuendos. Whether we want to put this into the video or not depends on who our audience is, in FKA Twigs, Papi Pacify the lyrics Oooh, papi pacify. Pacify our love, our love, love, the visuals match the nature of the lyrics evident in these screen grabs

IM TRYNNA LEAVE MY CITY CAUSE THERE AIN'T NOTHING TO DO HERE. THEY TREAT ME LIKE IM NEW HERE. I GUESS IM LIVING DIFFERENT. ILL ADMIT IT.
This is another location idea, the city would be a good setting, filming in different parts of London with various areas as our backdrop. Also an idea would be filming from the perspective of the protagonist, looking for somewhere new to go. It also gives us the theme of travelling and searching for something new and exciting, which is something we can display through shot types, but also something that links with our fantasy, trippy concept. Theres also a slight pretentious attitude regarding living different, which gives a bit of an arrogant persona which again is something that may be displayed through the performance aspect of the video, but also conforming to Andrew Goodwins Star Theory in many ways.

YOU JUST HATE WHEN I GO MISSING, YOU JUST HATE WHEN I GO MISSING .
This is the main message throughout the song, which is something that we need to build upon in order to make a strong relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. The word missing connotes something disappearing and the inability of being able to find that. The lyrics also tell us that it is the male that goes missing, which is an important factor to keep in mind in order for the video to make sense and also based on the performance within he music video. The idea of a chase of a sense of movement comes into mind when thinking of the word missing, someone trying desperately to find someone else. A music video that uses movement extremely creative is by LNIP- Breathe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGPUFrZkAYA

OVERLAPPING: HES COMING HOME, COMING HOME COMING HOME, PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE, HATE WHEN I GO MISSING, I GO MISSING IN MY ZONE. (X4)
Nearing the end of the song the two vocalists overlap with the female singing the chorus and the male a hook in which they repeat four times. By the soundtrack overlapping an interesting aspect would be to have the visuals overlapping, which again is something found in the genre of music, overlapping images, gel filters, distorted imagery etc. The lyrics please leave me alone also are an important part, a rejection from the male protagonist.

I go missing in my zone could be a reference to music, often in rap/hip -hop music a zone is a state in which an artist goes into to produce good music.
