What is Obsession Compulsive Disorder?


Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): is a disorder of the brain and behavior. OCD causes severe anxiety in those affected. OCD involves both obsessions and compulsions that take a lot of time and get in the way of important activities the person values.

Symptoms and Behaviors of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Obsessions:


contamination fears of germs imagining having harmed oneself or others imagining losing control or having aggressive urges intrusive sexual thoughts or urges excessive religious or moral doubt forbidden thoughts A need to have things "just right"; They way they put it. A need to tell, ask, or confess

Compulsions:
washing Repeating Checking Touching Counting OCD symptoms can occur in people of all ages. Statistical analysis indicate that a major genetic component is involved in the occurrence of OCD, though the exact gene has not yet been identified.

Research shows that OCD does run in families and that genes likely play a role in the development of the disorder.

There are many ways to overcome OCD with self-will and others may undergo treatment.

Here are some treatments used to help conquer OCD: Psychotherapy

Medication like Antidepressants


Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) A property trained therapist

Teaching Strategies
Children with OCD may struggle in the classroom setting due to certain OCD symptoms and behaviors, frustrations can disrupt the student and their peers as well. Here are some strategies that can help the student.

Extended time for tests A buddy system for peer coaching Private testing rooms Skip read aloud (May cause a trigger to OCD) Use books that come with a recording Break homework into chunks Advance notice for assignments Seating arrangements Being aware of childs triggering events. It is important for teachers to understand what caused the child to trigger the OCD symptoms in the classroom.

Estimated of about 1 in 100 adults (between 2 to 3 million adults in the United States) currently have OCD

At least 1 in 200 (500,000) kids and teens that have OCD.


As many as 4 million Americans have OCD, including 1 million children and teenagers
