Weather

Hungary has a continental climate. This means that the weather is quite easily predictable and there are big differences between the weather in the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Hungary is protected from the extremes weather by the mountain ranges encompassing her from almost all sides. Temperatures above 30 degree Celsius may occur in July and August but generally do not last long. January and February are the coldest months, but even then the average temperature does not fall below minus 5 degree Celsius.

Winter
Winters are usually cold, windy and very humid with snowfall. The average temperature is 0 to 15 C. Winter months are December, January, February. The coldest months are January and February. In winter people wear boots, gloves, stocking, trousers, sweater, fur coat. Saint Nicholas Day (6 December, Christmas Day (25 December) and New Year's Eve (31 December) are major celebrations in Western culture in winter.

Spring

Spring months are March, April and May. In spring people wear pullover, trousers, cardigan, raincoat, trainers and shoes. Easter is the major celebration in spring. The weather in spring is ideal for walking, hiking and just sitting in the garden.

Summer
Summers are hot and dry, with a lot of sunshine. The average daytime temperature in the summer is 27- 33 C, sometimes higher, 35 or more. Summer months are June, July and August. In summer girls wear skirts, Tshirts, blouse, swimsuit, dress, sandals; boys usually wear shorts, sleveless top. In summer there are different activities like sunbathing, swimming, windsurfing, diving, wakeboarding, going on boat trips and sailing, hiking and climbing mountains.

Autumn
Autumns are usually cool, foggy and rainy, but there are some weeks at beginning of autumn when the weather is very pleasant, with a lot of sunshine and warm breezes. The average yearly rainfall is approximately 600 mm; November is one of the rainiest months. Trees become colourful and there are a lot of beautiful fallen leaves in the forest. Autumn months are September, October, November. In autumn people wear pullover, trousers, cardigan, raincoat, trainers and shoes. You can hike and climb mountains.

Severe types of weather have effect on traffic. The most dangerous one is sleet, because a lot of drivers lose control over their vehicles. Snow and ice cause a lot of trouble on roads; especially to drivers who dont have winter tyres on their wheels. Fog is also dangerous: people drive a bit slower, but they usually keep a shorter distance from the car in front and this increases the risk of crashes. Rain is also an important factor to mention, as a big cities we always have huge traffic jams during rainy periods.
