SHEET AND COIL
HOT ROLLED & COLD ROLLED
CATEGORIZATION
 Most Hot Rolled grades can be classified into three broad groups:
 Formable Steels (ductile), Structural Steels (strength) and Analysis or
Composition (Carbon or chemical specific) Steels. There is also
Hardness Groupings e.g. HA70T that have specific applications as
opposed to commercial applications.

 Most Cold Rolled grades can be classified into four broad groups:
 Formable Steels (ductile), Hardness Steels, Structural Steels
(strength) and Composition Steels (Carbon or chemical specific).
HOT ROLLED
The system for HOT ROLLED and COLD ROLLED coil and sheet product
identification, is normally composed of several elements expressed in the
following order:

CALCULATIONS QUIZ
1. How many sheets per tonne are there for
0.90 mm BMT X 1200mm X 2400mm
Aluzinc?

SHEETS PER TONNE =

METRES² / TONNE ÷ WIDTH IN METRES ÷ LENGTH IN METRES

= 138.22 METRES² / TONNE ÷ 1.2 METRES ÷ 2.4 METRES

= 47.99 SHEETS PER TONNE

= 48 SHEETS PER TONNE

CALCULATIONS QUIZ
2. What length is a coil of 0.70mm BMT X
145mm Galv Z275 weighing 1114 kilograms?

COIL LENGTH IN METRES =

METRES² / TONNE ÷ WIDTH IN METRES X WEIGHT IN TONNES

= 172.86 METRES² / TONNE ÷ 0.145 METRES X 1.114 TONNES

= 1328.04 METRES

= 1328 METRES
CALCULATIONS QUIZ
3. How much weight is in a coil of 3.00mm X
1200mm Hot Rolled , 350 metres long ?

COIL WEIGHT IN TONNES =

LENGTH IN METRES X WIDTH IN METRES ÷ METRES² / TONNE

= 350 METRES LONG X 1.2 METRES WIDE ÷ 42.46 METRES² / TONNE

= 9.8916 TONNES

= 9.892 TONNES
CALCULATIONS QUIZ
4. (a) How much weight is in a pack of 57
sheets 1.60mm X 240mm X 1720mm
Hot Rolled ?
(b)How many sheets per tonne are there ?
(a) 57 SHEETS X 1.72 METRES LONG = 98.04 METRES

PACK WEIGHT=
LENGTH IN METRES X WIDTH IN METRES ÷ METRES² / TONNE
= 98.04 METRES X 0.24 METRES WIDE ÷ 79.62 METRES² / TONNE
= 0.2955 TONNES
= 0.296 TONNES

(b) SHEETS PER TONNE =

METRES² / TONNE ÷ WIDTH IN METRES ÷ LENGTH IN METRES
= 79.62 METRES² / TONNE ÷ 0.240 METRES ÷ 1.720 METRES
= 192.877 SHEETS PER TONNE
= 193 SHEETS PER TONNE
