GPS

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). The GPS uses a constellation of between 24 and 32 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, that enable GPS receivers to determine their location, speed, direction, and time. GPS was developed by the United States Department of Defence.

GPS CONSTELLATION

Method of operation
The original GPS design contains two ranging codes: the Coarse/Acquisition (C/A) code, which is freely available to the public, and the restricted Precision (P) code, usually reserved for military applications. A GPS receiver calculates its position by carefully timing the signals sent by the constellation of GPS satellites high above the Earth. Each satellite continually transmits messages containing the time the message was sent, a precise orbit for the satellite sending the message . The receiver uses the arrival time of each message to measure the distance to each satellite, thereby establishing that the GPS receiver is approximately on the surfaces of spheres centred at each satellite.

MOTOROLA GT ON CORE

GPS RECIEVER

Features: 8 channel parallel receiver. Code plus carrier tracking. Position filtering. Optional on board Lithium battery. Antenna current sense circuit. Operates on 5V regulated power. TTL interface to host equipment. 3D positioning within 25 meters. Latitude, longitude, height, velocity, heading, time, and satellite status information output either continuously.

Advantages: - elimination of expensive low-loss heliax RF cable. - elimination of in-line amplifiers. - elimination of additional power supplies for the amplifiers.

- ease of installation due to smaller and more flexible twisted pair cables.
