TZVETAN TODOROV EQULIBRIUM

With planning/making my film opening I could used Todorovs equilibrium theory, however maybe not all of the stages because it will be only around 2 minutes long, however if I am using flashes of future events, showing the disequilibrium and attempt to repair the equilibrium, may make it more interesting and draw my target audience in.

VLADIMIR PROPP
CHARACTER TYPE
PROTAGONIST ANTAGONIST HEROINE FATHER HELPER DONOR MENTOR

ROLE WITHIN NARRATIVE

Leads the narrative usually looking for something or trying to solve something. Gets in the protagonists way. Prize or reward for protagonists. Authority figure who offers a reward to the hero for completing the quest at hand. Helps hero often acts as a sidekick Gives hero something often a clue Teaches and guides hero

When planning/making my film I could also consider using Vladimir propps theory of always having a role within the narrative, following a structure, to appeal to my target audience, take other gangster films as reference, how it worked out for them and manipulate to the storylines. I think it would also help me go along with traditional representations of both men and women.

ROLAND BARTHES
Roland Barthes believes that there are 5 codes to form a meaning from

the narrative. Action code Applies to any actions that implies a further narrative action. Enigma codes Refers to any element in a story that is not explained and, therefore, exists as an enigma for the audience, raising questions that demand explication. The 3 other codes arent really used for trailers however action and enigma are the main elements to get the audience interested in coming to watch the film.

When planning/making my film I could consider using Roland Barthes theory, as stated above I would focus more on action codes and enigma codes, I think it would help entice the target audience if I specifically mould it to the wants of the audience.

CLAUDE LEVI-STRAUSS
LIGHT/ DARK GOOD/ EVIL NOISE/ SILENCE YOUTH/ AGE RIGHT/ WRONG

Binary opposition, main force has equal and opposite forces. Conflicts between them will drive the narrative on until, finally, some sort of resolution or balance is achieved.
I think one of the main theorys I will use in planning will be Claude Levi-Strauss theory on binary oppositions. I think the contrast between them makes it stand out more and maybe give a better effect than not contrasting it. You can clearly see the main binary oppositions in films, focusing on protagonist and antagonist, I think introducing both the antagonist and protagonist in the first 2 minutes will give the audience room to compare them throughout the film, making both of the oppositions, in this instance protagonist/antagonist, stronger.
