OBJECTIVES OF THE SESSION

PWBAT understand the importance and need to integrate values in the classroom. PWBAT discuss performance tasks that they can use in their classrooms in order to integrate values and mindsets.

QUESTION 1:
What is the reality of the world we live in right now and what will the world look like 40/50 years from now?

THE WORLD TODAY

Two billion are in extreme poverty (a slide with each one of these sentences and a picture depicting it) The rich-poor divide is the highest Nature is being pillaged like never before Mass urbanization is destroying village life Economic growth is unsustainable Science is used for mass destruction

Corruption is rampant and our democratic governments are failing us. Voter turn out has been on the decline for the past couple of decades. Oscar Wilde said that we are in an age where we know the price of everything and the value of nothing. He said this in 1890 but I think it still holds true today. How do we make sure our kids value the priceless?

THE WORLD 40-50 YEARS FROM NOW

QUESTION 2:
What are the specific values that you will prioritize for your kids to be responsible and successful citizens today as well as 40-50 years from now?

Values to prioritize in our kids:

Ivy martinez 13 year old extremist Indian girl 12 year old Egyptian boy The girl who silenced the world for 5 minutes

Two major ways to teach values in class:

Intrinsically Extrinsically

QUESTION 3 :
So take a few minutes to look at the values that you prioritized in the previous question. Figure out which one you personally need to work on. Now discuss with a partner how you will embody this value as a person and as a role model for your kids.

Teaching Values extrinsically:

WHY performance tasks?

QUESTION 4 :
What performance task can you create in your class that integrate your prioritized values with the content you have to teach? Discuss in groups of 4.

Performance tasks that drive values:

The World Peace Game by John Hunter. Riverside kids Jewellery Designing.

Ashwath Bharaths City Planning Project.
