Apollo was incorporated as a Public Limited Company in the year 1979. A 250-bed hospital with an emphasis on specialty and super specialties in over fifty departments at Chennai. Today it is the largest healthcare group in Asia. Owns and manages 43 hospitals in India & overseas and has a total capacity of 7500 beds. Declared as a 'Centre of Excellence' by the Government of India. It has a record of treating 8 million treated patients, 3,15,000 health checkups done & 45,000 cardiac surgeries with a success rate of 98.5%, on par with global standards.

Apollo- The Pioneers


They are the 1st Indian hospital group to introduce new techniques in coronary angioplasty, stereotactic radiotherapy & radio surgery. They pioneered orthopedic procedures, performed liver, multi-organ & blood transplant in India. Major competitors of Apollo are Fortis hospitals, Max healthcare, manipal hospitals, Vaatsalya healthcare global enterprise, etc. Apollo recently had a merger between 3 group companies, Indian hospital corporation ltd, Deccan hospitals corporation ltd, Om sindoori hospitals ltd, which has helped in saving the cost by 10% by consolidating the inventory.

95% of Apollo health care revenue comes from hospital services & 5% from retail formats such as dental & diabetes clinics. They are aiming to raise revenue generation from retail formats upto 25%. Companies consolidated revenue was Rs 1843.3 Cr, which is a 22% increase from a year earlier. Focus is more on day care formats where patients go back home the same day surgery is conducted.

In Nov 2012, Apollos shares hit a record high of Rs 902 after rising 60% in 2012, whereas BSE rose 19% during that period. At present there share price is at Rs 835.15 .

Expenses of Apollo have also increased from Rs 6596 million to Rs 8234 million. Overhead expense control measures should be taken to minimize the cost. Apollo aims to invest about Rs 2000 Cr to add 3000 beds in next 3 years. They introduced robotic surgery last year at 4 major hospitals.
