FREEDOM

The idea of freedom was other cause of the revolt as

villeins wanted to be free labourers. Villeins They had to work without payment. They had to pay fines to their lords. They could not leave the lords land without permission. They were like slaves.

1377,Richard II became king when he was only 10 years old. His government was weak as his uncle, John of Gaunt, took decisions for him.

JOHN BALL
John Ball was a lollard priest . He was a follower of John Wycliffe .He said that it was wrong that some people were very rich while others were very poor. John Ball was an important cause of the revolt as in his sermons he criticized the feudal system. He was put in prison by the bishop of Norwich. After he was released, he preached in Essex and Kent. Archbishop of Canterbury punished the people who listened to Balls sermons. Ball was arrested and sent to Maidstone Prision.

The war was expensive and people were forced to pay for it. Peasants and lords had to pay the same amount of money.

On 30 May 1381, peasants refused to pay a tax collector called Thomas Bampton in Essex. People feared a new poll tax, so they rioted. Soon Essex and Kent were in revolt.

On 7 June 1381, Wat Tyler was made leader and John Ball was freed from Maidstone jail.

On 10 June 1381, about 60,000 rebels went to London to take their complains to the king.

On 12 June 1381, the Kent revels camped at Blackheath; the Essex revels camped at Mile End outside London. The Essex rebels burned down Lambeth Palace, the Archbishops London home. Richard II tried to meet the revels but his advisers didnt let him do it.

Rebels crossed London Bridge into the city. Rebels destroyed the home of Sir Robert Hales, the Royal Treasurer. The law courts at the Temple were attacked. They burnt the Savoy Palace.

The King met Wat Tyler. Richard pardoned the rebels and gave them freedom. Many rebels went home but....

Richard met Tyler again. Tyler was beheaded. Richard calmed the rebels, agreeing to their demands

Hundred of revels were hanged including John Ball. Government gave up trying to control wages. English Government didnt want to introduce a poll tax. When Mrs. Thatcher introduced one, she faced riots. After the revolt, Richard became a very arrogant man. The revolt helped to bring to an end to the feudal system.
