DERBY RACE CHALLENGE

MS. BUENCONSEJO PERIOD 2

Andrea Badua Erica Mendoza Katie Lee

INTRODUCTION
Currently in Physics, were learning about the topic of acceleration. So we conducted an experiment in which we would build our own cars. We will be testing how far and fast it goes. P R O B L E M How can we build a car to have a distance of at least 2m ? H Y P O T H E S I S If we build the car without so many layer s to make it heavy, and put wheels that are circular and big enough, it should be able to pass the 2m mark .

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES
The Standard that we are currently learning is to solve problems that involve constant speed and average speed. When forces on an object are unbalanced, the object will change its velocity. The learning objectives were: To design and construct dif ferent designs of car that can run at a certain distance Calculate cars speed, velocity, and acceleration. Explain the physics of racing car. Relate an issue in science or technology that has global implications.

MATERIALS
Cereal Box/ Light cardboard Cutter Scissors Glue Gun Straws Stick Balloon

PROCEDURES
Sketch the measurements onto the cereal box or the light cardboard.

Using the cutter/scissors, cut the shapes you need to form the car.

PROCEDURES
Use the hot glue gun to glue the shapes together. Poke (or use a hole puncher) four holes on the sides of the car for the wheels. Now make four wheels and poke holes in the center. This is optional, but before you do, you can also put the sticks through the straws so it would be more stable.

PROCEDURES
Then get two sticks and stick it through the holes then through the wheels.

Make sure the wheels are turning and if necessary, add glue next to the wheel. Time for testing it!

GUIDE QUESTIONS
Which car runs the fastest? How did you know? According to the data, the car that ran the fastest was the first trial of Ericas car with 3.74m. Which car runs the slowest? How did you know? According to the data, the car that ran the slowest was mine at the first trial with 2m. Which car accelerates the least? The car that accelerated the least was Katies car during her second trial. Which car accelerates the most? The car that accelerated the most was Ericas car during the first trial.

DISTANCE VS. TIME

VELOCIT Y VS. TIME

(CONTINUATION)
Describe the graph in two complete sentences. In the graph, you can see that Erica has the fastest acceleration, speed, and velocity. It also depicts how we had improved in the second trials more than the first. What are the factors that may af fect the motion of the cars? Factors that may have af fected the motion of the cars was the fact that the lane we used to test it was narrow and there were many obstacles like the chairs and tables.

OBSERVATION & ANALYSIS

We tested our cars in a narrow lane, so the results may not be precise. I observed that the cars had the tendency to drift and turn for south when it was originally going west. We needed to position it correctly and blow just enough air into the balloon for it to go straight.

REFLECTION
In conclusion, my hypothesis was accurate. With my building strategy, I was able to reach my desired distance of 2m. In my second trial I was even able to reach beyond 3m! Im proud of this car, and my only regret is that I wish I had covered the parts of the car with a newspaper so it would have been easier for me to paint and design it later on. It may not look appealing, but Im quite proud of the distance it reached seeing as it took me a long time to perfect the wheels.

GLOBAL ISSUE
As the world continues to progress we are able to have new technology. One of them would be the development of cars. Day by day, they are reproducing. And day by day, the global issue is growing worst because of them. Firstly, the cars gas produces gases that collide with the gases in the air causing for it to be polluted. Secondly, as the air becomes more polluted, it becomes a health problem for the people, especially those who are elderly or have lung problems. Though cars are convenient for destinations that are far of reach, it also causes many problems.

SAFET Y RULES

Do not play or mess around with materials or while working. When using the hot glue gun, do not point it at anyone. When using the cutter, be sure to have the wood under it so to not hurt yourself or damage the table.
