Telecom Factories are the capacitive units of BSNL.The products of the telecom factories are exclusively manufactured for the use of BSNL.The telecom factory had been placed for most crucial roles in the maintenance of the telecom services.However,with the setting of companies like ITI,HTL,SCL,the role of telecom factories have been increasing day by day.

About the BSNL Telecom Factory,Alipore-27

The telecom factory 248,A.J.C Bose Road,Alipore,Kolkata-700027 is the oldest and first establishment of post and telegraph in India known as P &T workshop started in year 1855 for the purpose of meeting requirements of telegraph lines and equipments of the country and gradually it grew up as a regular manufacturing concern fulfilling the requirements of telecommunication department. In 1969 the telegraph workshop organization was renamed as telecom factory organization under the part of dept. of telecommunication (D.O.T) Ministry of Communication, Govt. of India in recognition of its activities of telecommunication and on 1st October 2000,the factory was corporatized as the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited(B.S.N.L)a Govt. of India enterprise along with other parts of DOT. The factory is located in the prime location of Kolkata. It covers an area of 13.5 acres.The office area is approximately 6364 sq. meters and shop area is approximately 21727 sq. metres. The factory has v Range of latest injection mouldingmachines(50 M.T to 250 M.T). v High speed punching machines(250K.N) v Hydaulic press(160 M.T) v Profile expansion machines for joining kits v Assembly line for manufacturing of D.P. boxes and LJUs v Drilling,punching machines for towers.

OPTICAL FIBRE

A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves. Fiber optics has several advantages over traditional metal communicationslines: bandwidth than metal cables. This means that they can carry more data. Fiber optic cables are less susceptible than metal cables to interference.

HOW DOES IT WORKS

An optical fiber is a cylindrical dielectric waveguide (nonconducting waveguide) that transmits light along its axis, by the process of total internal reflection. The fiber consists of a core surrounded by a cladding layer, both of which are made of dielectric materials. To confine the optical signal in the core, the refractive index of the core must be greater than that of the cladding.
