The New Chart of Accounts

Definitions and Objectives

The chart of accounts provides the framework within which the accounting records are constructed. It is defined as:

A List of General Ledger Accounts consisting of the Real and Nominal accounts

Definitions and Objectives Cont.

Real Accounts - these are the balance sheet accounts for assets, liabilities and equity accounts.

Nominal Accounts these are the income and expense accounts.

Objectives of the New Chart of Accounts

The new chart of accounts is designed to: achieve uniformity in accounting and reporting; facility in consolidating financial reports; and adaptability to computerization.

Basic Features of the NGAS affecting the Change in the Chart of Accounts
Eventual computerization of the agency accounting system
Computerization is the ultimate objective of the NGAS. Hence, the new system shall be adopting responsibility accounting.
