Tortured Soul Biography

Tortured Souls origins date back to 2001 while Urich was steering Coolys Hot Box, an acid jazz outfit also featuring under-theradar indie soul vocalist Angela Johnson. After putting Coolys Hot Box on hiatus, Urich composed Might Do Something Wrong, which was quickly picked up by New York-based deep house label Central Park Recordings, and Tortured Soul was born. Thanks to the cool laidback mix provided by Osunlade, the song quickly became an underground staple at the iconic Club Shelter and helped jumpstart the development of a full-length disc generating more soulful house. With the 12-inch single in heavy rotation in the New York club circuit, Urich went into overtime to restructure the bands line-up: The session players on Might Do Something Wrong were out; bassist Jason JKriv Kriveloff and slick, jazz-honed keyboardist Ethan White formally Urichs bandmates in the rhythm section of NYC acid-jazz band Topaz were in. Together, the new trio forged a new cool sound by blending the freewheeling New York house and classic disco beats with elements of hip-hop, salsa and Roy Ayers-styled jazz-fusion.

The Members Biography of Tortured Soul

Ethan White (Keyboards & Background Vocals) Ethan White is a unique artist with a rich and vital musical history. He began playing piano at age 7, studying classical music at first, then discovered jazz in his early teens. In the mid 90s, Ethan came to New York to study jazz piano with Donald Friedman, an esteemed pianist who has played with jazz luminaries such as Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy and Herbie Mann. Ethan eventually garnered respect in the NYC jazz circuit and landed a residency at the famous venue Birdland-opening for countless musical legends that would play there. This period of the late 1990s was an incredible time of creativity and collaboration for the jazz scene in New York, and Ethan eventually became part of Topaz-a 6 piece acid jazz group that toured the country for several years.

Jordan Scannella (Bass & Background Vocals)

New York City bassist Jordan JORSCAN Scannella is the newest member of the trio that is Tortured Soul. After an extensive audition process, JORSCAN was singled out to fill the massive shoes of departing bassist JKriv. JORSCANs ability to bring perpetual groove to all his musical endeavors, whether holding down a sticky bass line or stepping into the spotlight for an adventurous bass solo, made him the obvious choice to maintain and further develop the Tortured Soul sound. JORSCAN began on piano at age 9 and picked up the bass as an 8th grader at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio. Honing his skills in jazz, rock and classical music throughout high school, he was given a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music. JORSCAN made the most of this experience, studying composition and production while earning the Bass Department Achievement Award for his performance ability.

J. Christian Urich (Lead Vocals & Drums) Christian was born and raised in Manhattan. From the moment he existed he was surrounded by music and theater as his parents were professional actors and singers on television and Broadway. At age 6 he began playing violin and piano, at age 12 he sang with the New York City Opera and The Metropolitan Opera, and at age 13 he began to play the drums. He majored in music composition at SUNY Purchase, and in 1993 wrote and produced Dont Throw My Love Around for his project Coolys Hot Box that was signed by Pete Tong and released on Polygram Records. Since then he has written, produced, and collaborated on roughly 100 dance and R&B tracks released on various labels including Central Park, Strictly Rhythm, Sole, Coco Machete, Delicious Vinyl, Sony Japan, Columbia Japan, R-Senal, Dome, Defected, Purpose, Velour, Papa, and TSTC Records. He has collaborated with DJ Spinna, Roger Sanchez, Ndea Davenport, Angela Johnson, Sabina (Brazilian Girls,) Victor Axelrod (Ticklah,) and, of course, Jason Kriveloff and Ethan White. As a professional drummer and singer, Christian has played over 1000 shows all over the world; and he has the vitality, virility, will power, and stage presence of 10,000 stampeding rhinos.
