AIDS
 AIDS stands for: A cquired I mmune D eficiency
S yndrome
 AIDS is a medical condition. A person is
diagnosed with AIDS when their immune system
is too weak to fight off infections.
 Since AIDS was first identified in the early
1980s, an unprecedented number of people
have been affected by the global AIDS epidemic.
Today, there are an estimated 33 million people
living with HIV/AIDS.

A d ay t o k eep t he p romises
 As of 2008, each year's World AIDS Day theme is chosen
by the World AIDS Campaign's Global Steering
Committee after extensive consultation with people,
organizations and government agencies involved in the
prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. For each World
AIDS Day from 2005 through 2010, the theme will be
"Sto p AID S. Kee p the Pro mise .", with a yearly sub-
theme. This overarching theme is designed to encourage
political leaders to keep their commitment to achieve
universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment,
care, and support by the year 2010.

Aim of W or ld AI DS D ay
 The aim of the World AIDS Day is to bring
people’s attention to the worldwide
challenges and consequences of the
epidemic in order to create change. World
Aids Day was initiated following a summit
of Health Ministers in London (1988). In
the meeting, the leaders realized that a
united global effort was required to check
the spread of HIV and AIDS.
WHO – A ID S D ay
 Annual observance aimed at raising awareness
of the global epidemic of AIDS (acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome) and the spread of
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). World
AIDS Day occurs on December 1 and was
established by the World Health Organization
(WHO) in 1988 to facilitate the exchange of
information among national and local
governments, international organizations, and
individuals.
Th eme for 20 09
 The theme has been chosen to address the
critical need to protect human rights and attain
access for all to HIV prevention, treatment, care
and support. It also acts as a call to countries to
remove laws that discriminate against people
living with HIV, women and marginalized
groups. Countries are also urged to realise the
many commitments they made to protect human
rights in the Declaration of Commitment on
HIV/AIDS (2001) and the Political Declaration on
HIV/AIDS (2006).

infected with the virus. Around half of all

so before they are 25 and are killed by
AIDS before they are 35.

 Some 59 countries still have laws that restrict
the entry, stay and residence of people living
with HIV based on their positive HIV status only,
discriminating against them in their freedom of
movement and right to work. At the same time,
laws and regulations protecting people with HIV
from discrimination and women from gender
inequality and sexual violence are not fully
implemented or enforced.
