Sample Application that Compares

Section 012 Team 29 Alexa Dart Daniel Ellinwood Ekin Orer Zeshi Qi
Overview Citations Start QUIT

The goal is to teach peers about the world about nanotechnology and how it impacts engineering fields.

Overview
Help the user have an understanding of size and scale by relating a nanoparticle to an everyday object. Peers will learn about how the relative impact of forces change with scale through an interactive application. Both these ideas will be applied in an application regarding Nano coatings for aircrafts within aerospace engineering.

GUI Interface 1-Understanding Size and Scale

If a nano particle was scaled up to the size of a basketball, about how big would it be? Your answer is (in)correct! How to figure this out: 1. The definition of a nanoparticle is any particle between 1 and 100 nanometers. Click on the power of nano: 10-11 10-9 100 109 This is (in)correct. The answer is 10-9 Pull Down No change Ant sized Car sized Eiffel tower sized Saturn sized

2. Estimate the size of a basketball- approximately 0.25 meters. Since we are scaling up by a nanoparticle we multiply the size of the basketball by the inverse of the size of a nanoparticle. What is the numerical value of the scaled up basketball? This is (in)correct! The answer is 2.5*10^8 3. Go back and estimate the size of the basketball.

GUI Interface 2- Relative Impact of Forces

In the nano reference frame mass is relatively and electrical charge is relatively

Pull Down small Large

Pull Down small Large

This is (in)correct! Answers should be: small, large In our reference frame mass is relatively

and electrical charge is relatively

Pull Down small Pull DownLarge small Large

This is (in)correct! Answers should be: large, small Why is this so: Due to the electrical force formula and the gravitational force formula and the assumption that electrical charge is constant, we can conclude that as mass increases the gravitational force has a larger impact on the objects. Therefore, in the nano reference frame where mass is small the electrical force would have a larger impact on the objects. Please try the problem again.

GUI Interface 3- Aerospace Engineering

Aerospace engineers have developed a nanoparticle coating that is applied to aircrafts in order to keep ice from freezing on the surface and causing problems with the plane. Which of the following surfaces would be more likely to cause a plane not to have a build up of ice?
A

See next slide for answer and explanation to be included in the GUI

Explanation for Interface 3

Your answerer is (in)correct! The answer is A. Choice A is correct because the water isnt able to go within the crevices, therefore the water has less surface area to attach to causing it to be easily be taken off even if it is frozen onto the plane. This relates to size and scale because the water resistant effect is dependent on the size of each ridge. If the ridge is to small (like in b) the water will be able to attach completely., however in example a the water can only attach at the tops of the ridges. This also relates to the impact of forces because the size of the coating is so small it will have a repulsive electric force on the water, because water has a dipole.

GUI Interface 4- FUN

The user inputs value 1-5. For each value chosen a corresponding question will come across the screen. This will be a timed game and the goal is for the user to correctly answer all five questions within one minute. Questions: 1. What is the magnitude of a nanoparticle? 2. For small particles which attraction force is relatively larger? 3. True/ False a more jagged surface area helps eliminate water from freezing on a plane. 4. True/ False for nano scale when mass increases the gravitational force does not change. 5. If If a nano particle was scaled up to the size of a baseball, Pull Down about how big would it be? Please repeat the game until you win!!
