OVERVIEW
DYNAMOMETER:
o An instrument used for measuring mechanical force or torque or rotational speed(rpm).

CHASSIS DYNAMOMETER:
o A dynamometer that can measure torque and power delivered by the power train of a vehicle directly from the
drive wheel or wheels is known as a chassis dynamometer.

WHEN AND WHERE WAS IT FIRST INTRODUCED?

o The idea of running a complete vehicle under power while it was at rest was first conceived by railway locomotive
engineers before being adopted by the road vehicle industry.
PURPOSE
WHAT DOES IT DO?

o Chassis dynamometer allow the static observation of the performance of the complete vehicle
while it is, in most respects, effectively in motion.

HOW DOES IT MAKE OUR LIVES EASIER OR BETTER?

o The cost and the physical strain of using human drivers on test tracks or public roads are high.
o Data can be simulated easily with a computers attached to the chassis dynamometer.
o Mobility of the device is easier and can easily be confined in a small place.
o The most important of which is the possibility of testing complete vehicle performance or engine
performance as installed. There is no requirement to take the engine out of the vehicle, which
simplifies both the test procedure and the environment required to support the test.
MAIN PARTS
The mechanical assembly consists of three fundamental parts:
(l) Left roller assembly
(2) Right roller assembly
(3) Mounting track
• The roller assemblies include the rollers themselves and a power absorber i.e. basically a
dynamometer.
• The dynamometer includes a computerized system to control vehicle loading and simulate inertia
and road load while maintaining the two separate assemblies at equal speeds.
OPERATION
• All chassis dynamometers, both the driving and non-driving tires of the vehicle must be
positioned perpendicularly to the axis of the rollers before the test begins . this positioning is
referred to as "vehicle alignment“.
• Driving wheels is placed at the centre of the rollers.
• By using belts wheels are locked to prevent its axial movement.
• The wheels of an automobile spin the dynamometer drums, and the computer simulate the data.
