Alignment of Burner Blocks

In Order to maintain fire ball size and tangential firing from burners it is essential to maintain the degree of angle of burner blocks within permissible limit of +/-1 deg. BHEL has prescribed following two methods for measurement of angles of these burner blocks.
1-Geometrical method with Piano wire 2-Theodoloite Method.

A-In Piano wire method , measurement of angle is very cumbersome and inaccurate since it involves fixing of piano wire parallel to the water wall and perpendicular to the burner block.

Sketch showing the arrangement is enclosed. In this process the measurement of angles is based on the calculation of angles based on the distances measured from the point on the piano wire parallel to the water wall and perpendicular to the burner block.

B- Theodolite Method:-In this method cross wire fixed on the opening provided for oil gun on the burner block, fixing of cross wire required at both the end of oil gun (outside of furnace as well as in side of furnace), finally theodolite focused through centre of both the cross wire to measure the angle of burner block.

Alignment of Burner Blocks

In theodolite method fixing of cross wire on oil gun end from inside the furnace itself required necessary arrangement which is a difficult & time taking job. In theodolite method it is difficult to maintain the rigidity of base of theodolite while focusing through cross wire, even a little bit movement near the theodolite disturb the focus point which finally affect the accuracy of angle calculated.

Alignment of Burner Blocks

Initially both the methods, geometrical method with piano wire as well as theodolite method prescribed by BHEL were tried for measurement of angle of burner block at dadri project but lot of difficulty were faced with respect to accuracy & making necessary arrangement for alignment of burner block

Alignment of Burner Blocks

Inspite of above mentioned two methods a new method was adopted at Dadri project to measure the angle of burner block with the help of laser beam. In this laser beam method a block of 80 mm dia. & 40 mm long round bar with a 2mm drilled hole at centre & a laser source were used to measure the angle.

Alignment of Burner Blocks

In this laser beam method pre-fabricated round bar placed in the opening provided for oil gun on the burner block & the peripheral face of the round bar matched with the face of oil gun opening on the burner block with the help of scale/any truly flat bar. Now the laser beam passed through 2mm hole provided on round bar.

Alignment of Burner Blocks

After passing through the round bar, laser beam strike to the respective water wall which is clearly visible. Based on the striking point of laser beam distance can be measured and finally angle can be calculated. In comparison to above two prescribed methods by BHEL this method is much easier, less time taking & more accurate.
