The Indian Subcontinent is the worst
cyclone-affected part of the world, as
a result of low-depth of the Ocean
bed and the way our coast is shaped.
The Indian Ocean is one of the six
major cyclone prone regions of the
world.
India has got a coast line of about 7200 kms
The destruction, during recent decades,
of coastal forests removed a barrier
which formerly mitigated the effects of
waves and wind from cyclonic storms.
Although much of the forest removal may
made ways for a fast-growing global
business.

Poverty also contributes to the cause of the cyclone. The

standard of protection (such as housing and infrastructure)
in an inappropriate way for a region subject to frequent intense
cyclones. And for poor people, without savings or insurance,
total loss turns a disaster into a catastrophe.
The lack of preparation by the local
authorities at cyclone prone regions
cannot be considered inevitable
either.

The manifestation of humanity's

overloading the earth's ecology  due to
global warming is a reality that cannot be
neglected. The human effect on the climate
is the major factor leading to cyclone.

Present conjunction of worldwide over-

consumption, pollution, and widening
inequality is another factor.
The unjust and dysfunctional global
conditions which are causative for several
factors, add to the scale of cyclone disaster.

Human ecological impacts are

of various kinds like :
use of land
use of water
effects on biodiversity
use of non-renewable resources
production of greenhouse gases
production of other unacceptable
pollutants
Managing Cyclones…

Managing any disaster requires at the outset, a clear

definition of the Role to be played by every
individual in a community

Community Contingency plan is a list of activities a

village decides to follow, to prevent loss of life,
livelihood and property in case of emergency.

It also identifies in advance, actions to be taken by

individuals in the community so that each one is
aware of specific responsibility when an emergency
warning is received
