AIDS:
Short for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. An infectious disease of the immune system caused by an human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIDS is a serious (often fatal) disease of the immune system transmitted through blood products especially by sexual contact or contaminated needles. It is characterized by a decrease in the number of helper T cells, which causes a severe immunodeficiency that leaves the body susceptible to a variety of potentially fatal infections.

Infected blood. Infected needles. Multiple partners. Infected mother to her baby before birth. Injectable Drug Abuse. Having any contact with infected blood or body fluids. Accidental inoculation from patient to a health care worker.

There is no cure for AIDS or HIV infection. Although

antiretroviral treatment can suppress HIV the virus that causes AIDS and can delay illness for many years, it cannot clear the virus completely.

People always should use a new condom while having sex. People should test blood while taking blood from blood

bank. HIV-infected mothers should avoid breast-feeding their infant/child. People should have the basic knowledge of HIV and AIDS including how to protect oneself from HIV infection. People should use a new and clean needle every time. People should follow every rules and their own religion. People should tell their sexual partners if they have HIV. Increasing social awareness about AIDS.

The first case of HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh was detected

in 1989. UNAIDS estimates that the number of people living with HIV in the country may be as high as 12,000. Bangladesh's HIV/AIDS prevention program started in 1985 The countrys HIV policies and strategies are based on successful family planning programs , including participation from schools, religious and community organizations . Awareness among the rural people is also needed.
