Presentation Outcomes

Identification of where the standards came from and why they were developed. Highlight some of the differences between the previous standards and the new Common Core Standards? What will be different for your child. Give some suggestions about how you can help at home. Allay anxiety & dispel any myths. Provide information on the changes to the assessment system. Identification of what BUSD is already doing to implement the Common Core Standards. Gather questions and share next steps.

Common Core State Standards

the same for everyone

fundamental knowledge needed to be college & career ready

adopted statewide; not federal

Shared, rigorous academic content with clear expectations for students

CCSS Timeline
Common

Core State Standards (CCSS) Initiative (09)

48 states voluntarily joined the initiative sponsored by Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association

CA

State Board of Ed unanimously adopted CCSS in August 2010

What are the Common Core State Standards?

The Common Core State Standards set grade-by-grade learning expectations for students in grades K-12 for Mathematics and for English Language Arts and Literacy. While states have had standards for more than 15 years, this set of standards is more focused on preparing students for success in college and career. They set clear, consistent and high learning goals.

The Common Core State Standards Important Points

The goal of the CCSS: All students graduating from our public school system as life-long learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to assume their positions in the global economy. The CCSS are designed to be relevant in the real world, reflecting both the knowledge and skills students need for success in both higher education and careers. The CCSS are internationally benchmarked: informed by curriculum and assessments from top-performing countries.

The Shifts in ELA/Literacy

1. Building knowledge through content-rich

nonfiction

2. Reading, writing and speaking grounded in

evidence from text, both literary and informational

3. Regular practice with complex text and its

academic language

www.achievethecore.org

How can you help your child in literacy? -Ask your child specific questions about what they read and how they know. Have them provide evidence. -Encourage children to read, then write and speak about, nonfiction text such as newspapers, magazines, and biographies. -Encourage children to research topics of interest and read series that relate to a central topic (even if the text is challenging).

The Shifts in Mathematics 1. Focus: Focus strongly where the standards focus 2. Coherence: Think across grades, and link to major topics

3. Rigor: In major topics, pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity

How can you help your child in math?

-Help children practice their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.

-Encourage children not to give up while solving problems, to build stamina and develop their critical thinking skills. Dont give them the answers - ask them to think of different ways they can solve problems.
-Have children illustrate the math they were thinking in their head and discuss it out loud. -Have children apply their math knowledge to a real-world scenario at home, such as doubling a recipe or calculating the area of a room.

A Note About 6-8 Math Program Changes

-The CCSS will bring about some changes to our math courses at the middle school level.

-These changes will be phased in over the next several years and include:
Accelerated math courses to begin in the 7th grade instead of 6th grade. (This will start with the 2014-2015 school year.) 8th Grade Math will be the on grade level course. This course will include many of the concepts from our current algebra course and some of the concepts from our current geometry course.

-Meetings regarding our math program will be scheduled in the Spring.
