Material selection, e.g., CS to CRA Coatings & linings (organic, inorganic) Cathodic & anodic protection Corrosion inhibitor Design Factors, etc.

If an active-passive alloy is maintained in the passive region with the potentiostat, its corrosion rate will reduced to ipass. This technique is based on the formation of protective film on metals by externally applied anodic currents.

An inhibitor is a chemical substance that, when added in small concentration to an environment, effectively decreases the corrosion rate. A minimum conc. of inhibitor must be present to maintain the inhibiting surface film. Thus, good circulation and the absence of any stagnant areas are necessary to maintain the required level of inhibitor concentration. An addition of inhibitors reduces icorr by increasing the Tafel slope and/or by reducing the exchange current density.

A. Adsorption-type inhibitors Organic compounds which adsorb on the metal surface and suppress metal dissolution and reduction reactions. Typical of this class of inhibitors are the organic amines.
B. Hydrogen evolution poisons The susbstances such as As, Sb, P, and S retard hydrogen recombination reaction, thereby reducing corrosion rate of a metal in acid solutions.

C. Scavengers These substances act by removing corrosive species from solution : Sodium sulfite : 2Na2SO3 + O2(sol.) 2Na2SO4 Hydrazine : N2H4 + O2 N2 + 2H2O
D. Oxidizers or passivators - effective only in metals showing active/passive transition. : CrO42- , NO2-, MoO42- , WO42- , and ferric salt

FROSIO, the Norwegian Professional Council for Education and Certification of Inspectors for Surface Treatment has been at the forefront of the field since it was established in 1986. About one thousand inspectors from over 40 different countries have been certified in accordance with NS 476 which is available in Norwegian and English language versions and has provided the basis for prEN 12837. Although FROSIO does not run its own training courses, the FROSIO Board has responsibility for the content of training courses, in accordance with NS 476. Two levels of inspector are appointed: inspector and assistant inspector. In the UK, the Institute of Corrosion has established a training centre in Sheffield with a structure based on the requirements of EN 45013. The requirements of the certification scheme are outlined in document ICorr Req 96: Requirements for the Certification of Personnel engaged in Painting and Coating Inspection. Certification is available for Painting Inspectors, Cathodic Protection Technicians, Pipeline Coatings Inspectors, Metallic Coatings Inspectors, and others, at up to three levels (Trainee, Assistant and Senior).

In France, ACQPA is concerned with the implementation of NF EN 45013, which deals with personnel, and NF EN 45011, which relates to paints and paint systems. It offers certificates for paint systems and for personnel involved in application and supervision, and for inspection personnel (using the FROSIO system under license). Also, CFPC, a financially autonomous branch of CEFRACOR, has been established to promote the certification of personnel in the field of cathodic protection and offers two levels of certification conforming with the AFNOR Standards NFA 05910, which deals with levels of competence, and NFA 05991, which covers certification of personnel in accordance with EN 45013. In Italy, APCE, the Italian Association for the Protection against Electrolytic Corrosion Underground has collaborated with CICPNP, a certification body for non-destructive testing personnel, to develop a certification body for personnel working in the cathodic protection field. http://www.efcweb.org/Structure/Working_Parties-p-104085/WP_7-p104100/Certification_of_personnel.html

Internationally, 1 ton of steel turns into rust every 90 seconds. The energy required to make 1 ton of steel is approximately equal to the energy that an average family consumes over three months.

Of every ton of steel from the worlds production, approximately 50% is required to replace rusted steel.
