Characteristics
AUTISTIC DISORDER
A mental condition characterized by difficulty in communicating with others. Infants failed to cuddle, make eye contact or exhibit facial responsiveness. Unable to play cooperatively or make friendship.
Language maybe totally absent. If child does speak, grammatical structure may be Impaired.
There is abnormal speech melody. Echolalia (repetition of words or phrases spoken by others).

Parent needs a great deal of support so that they do not reject their child because the child seems to be rejecting them because of lack of interaction. Behavior modification therapy may help. Day care program can help to promote social awareness.
Teaching phonics, programs to improve phonemic awareness, and guided repeated oral reading can help the struggling reader.
