Analyzing the
Fishing trip
We are trying to figure out;
How diverse is our pond fish population?
How has the biodiversity changed over the last few years?
What can the hidden pond's biodiversity tell us about the pond's
health?
 What is species diversity?
 Species diversity is an index that
incorporates the number of species in an
area and also their relative abundance. It
is generally a much more useful value
than species richness.
 The most common index of species
diversity is a family of equations called
Simpson's Diversity. Here is one such
example D= (n / N)2

Why is species diversity important
in a ecosystem?
 Species diversity is important in a ecosystem
because it is indeed important to the
functioning and stability of a ecosystem.

(They found that the grassland plots with the

greatest diversity of plant species lost far
less of their vegetative cover as a result of
the worst drought in 50 years, and
recovered much more quickly, than the
plots with the fewest species.)

 Our Fishing Trip
 Location: Hidden Pond, E.H.M.I.S, 225
Bowman Rd., Hanover, PA, York county

Our trip to the Hidden pond was fun, exciting,

successful for some, but not others. We all
were in different sections. We used seine
nets, dip nets, hip boots, bucket, jars, trays,
and fishing rods during our fishing trip.
Some baits people used were hot dogs,
bread, cheese, worms, corn, and power bait.
 Process
 After the fish bites we set the hook,
reel it in, then unhook the fish, next
we measure and identify the
specimen. Lastly, when we are done
we throw the fish back in the pond.
The rods our class used were closed
face and spinning reels.
