Why English?

Globalization: the borderless world needs one most effective communication language Advancement in Science and Technology: Research resources are mostly in English Information Age: Access to information is made easier with English

Objective at ITS

To help the students improve their English communication skills with emphasis on the Reading skill in order to facilitate their learning process, and the Speaking skill for prospective job requirements

Study Plan

16 -18 Sessions of class meeting: 100 min/session 5 Sessions of laboratory works: 60 min/session

Class Activities

Communication Practices Reading Comprehension: Improving the Reading Skill through practices in reading techniques Structure/Grammar review to foster students capability in sentence building needed in reading comprehension, as well as general communication Presentations

Laboratory Activities

Listening Comprehension (5 sessions) including 1 session for exercises. It comprises 20 percent of the total assessment of English

Evaluation
Final Test (UAS) 30 % Presentation (UTS) 25 % Laboratory Works 20 % Assignments and Class Activities 25 % TOTAL 100 % Scoring is made on a range of A-AB-B-BC-D-E

English for Science and Technology

It deals with the use of English in the fields of Science and Technology for the present and further studies It does not aim to teach the subject matter of science and technology but

to provide students with the language basis to access and understand materials on science and technology to express ideas and concepts in English

Some Characteristics of English for Science and Technology

Specialized Vocabulary The Use of Abbreviation The Use of Passive Sentences Functional Shifts: A word can serve both as a noun and as a verb Words ending in -ing have grammatically any of the 3
functions: as a Noun as an Adjective as a Verb

Semantic Variations: a word may have different meanings widening ( e.g. vendor) and restriction (e.g. mouse) of meaning

Special Noun Compounds e.g. measuring tool cross section Internet-based Test

Obtain the book English for Science and Technology from the Language Laboratory for the English Course Enroll yourself in groups of 20 (of the same department) for the Laboratory Work at the Language Laboratory Be prepared to focus on the classes and do all the assignments
