Is it the latest web service?

Is it recent communication trends?

Range of definitions in the literature

Social media refers to collaborative and interactive online communication and community-building tools.
Seeman, N., & Rizo, C. (2011). Using social media to improve healthcare quality: A guide to current practice and future promises - Part II. The Change Foundation Toronto

Social Media is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of User Generated Content
Kaplan, A. M., & Haenlein, M. (2010). Users of the world, unite! The challenges and opportunities of Social Media. Business Horizons, 53(1), 5968. doi:10.1016/j.bushor.2009.09.003

Social media is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into content publishers. It is the shift from a broadcast mechanism to a manyto-many model, rooted in conversations between anchors, people and peers. Social media uses the wisdom of the crowds to connect information in a collaborative manner. Social media can take many forms, including Internet forums, message boards, weblogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures and video.
(Evans, 2008, p. 33) - Social Media Marketing: An Hour a Day, Dave Evans (2008)

MOBILE AND WEB-BASED APPLICATIONS THAT ALLOW PEOPLE TO COMMUNICATE AND SHARE INFORMATION ACROSS MULTIPLE PLATFORMS
