How I Met Your Mother was inspired by Carter Bays and Craig Thomas' idea to "write about our friends and the stupid stuff we did in New York," Ted is based loosely on Bays, and Marshall and Lily are based loosely on Thomas and his wife. The role of Barney was initially envisioned as a "John Belushi-type character"[7] before Neil Patrick Harris won the role after being invited to an audition by the show's casting director Megan Branman. Robin Scherbatsky
Robin Charles Scherbatsky, Jr. was born July 23, 1980 in Vancouver, Canada, to Robin Charles Scherbatsky, Sr..Robin had a minor career as a Canadian popstar, under the stage name of Robin Sparkles, with one hit single "Let's Go to the Mall". After an accompanying music video[3] and the ensuing year-long mall tour, she developed a serious aversion to shopping malls. Robin followed "Let's Go to the Mall" with the "artistic follow-up" "Sandcastles in the Sand". And yes her dad did name robin ( a girl ) junior after him ( a man ). MARSHALL ERKISEN
Marshall is a tall, easy-going, naive optimist from St. Cloud, Minnesota. At the start of the series, Marshall lives with his best friend Ted Mosby and his girlfriend, Lily Aldrin; he proposes to her in the pilot episode. Marshall is an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. Born in 1978 and of Scandinavian descent, Marshall met Ted and Lily during their freshman year at University. He attended and later graduated Columbia Law School. Even though he stands at 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m), he is the shortest male member of his family.

Lily Aldrin
Lily and Marshall became engaged in the fall of 2005, as portrayed in the series pilot. On Thanksgiving Day 2005, Lily is arrested for public urination in St. Cloud, Minnesota, after taking a home pregnancy test in an alley behind a convenience store while visiting Marshall's . This maybe one of the reasons Marshalls mom doesnt like her. Lily, along with Ted and Marshall, occasionally indulge in "sandwiches" (Future Ted's euphemism for marijuana) during college and at their 20th college reunion.

TED MOSBY- often referred to as SHMOSBY

Ted, the central character of the show, was born April 25, 1978, is from Shaker Heights, Ohio and is an architect. After his best friend Marshall Eriksen gets engaged in, Ted decides to try and find his soulmate. NB !!!! This quest informs the general direction of the show, and Ted's relationship with the other main characters. He is a histrionic in his mid-thirties, wears a suit, likes women with "daddy issues" and is frequently willing to offer his (sometimes hypocritical) opinion.[5] At the beginning Barney is a huge womanizer, and has been described as a "high functioning sociopath" by his best friend, Ted Mosby, who wants to settle down He tends to be opportunistic and manipulative, and will attempt to manipulate a situation so that it goes his way. He is also highly competitive, and will take on "challenges" to complete (sometimes) outlandish tasks in order to prove his worth. He is proud and stubborn, and attempts to stand by his word no matter what
