FIRST PRIME MINISTER (1947-64) WATER VISIONARY OF INDEPENDENT INDIA

Dams

are our
modern Temples. Late Pt.J.L.Nehru

Water Champion of Bandung (Indonesia) ECAFE Summit 1951

(UN Economic Commission for Asia and Far East)

Background
Food and Energy shortages due to droughts and floods continue to hamper agricultural production and economic betterment of the people in most of the developing countries of Asia, Africa and the Far East, hence, need for Development and Management of Water Resources as well as Hydropower to step up to harness the water resources for Agricultural and Industrial Production hardly require an emphasis. The necessity of establishing a training centre to impart training to in service field engineers was felt by the leaders of the developing countries. The erstwhile Roorkee University being the best-known technical institute in the developing countries and having basic infrastructure for imparting such training was selected as the appropriate location for such a centre. Announcement to this effect was made at the Asia African Conference held at Bandung (Indonesia) in 1954 by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India who inaugurated the WRDTC (now Department of WRDM) on 25 November 1955 at University of Roorkee.

Objectives
To train and educate serving engineers / professionals from Asia, Africa and other developing countries in different aspects of Water Resources Development and Management. To bring together talent from these countries for a first-hand understanding and appreciation of each others water related problems. To help evolve, by pooling of knowledge, new techniques in Water Resources Development and Management suited to conditions of Afro-Asian region and other developing countries. To foster a feeling of brotherhood amongst the

engineers/professionals of various countries.

Goal
The education and training in the department aims at development of trained manpower to undertake activities of Water Resources Development and Irrigation Water Management with Competence, Confidence, Commitment, Courage and Compassion for the welfare of

mankind

UNIQUE ACADEMIC FEATURES

1.Preparation of project Report
Each Trainee Officer is required to prepare a project report, i.e., a comprehensive project scheme based on the field data supplied to him for a river valley project or irrigation water management project. The first part of the report is generally common for all students and covers the general aspects of planning and basic design studies. The second part is different for each elective and deals with the detailed design and construction or utilisation aspects pertaining to the field of specialization.

UNIQUE ACADEMIC FEATURES (Contd.)

2. Visit to projects
The visits are undertaken to different projects under construction or recently completed and to command area development works. Trainees study the choice of the dam and its design, river diversion arrangements, construction organisation, degree of mechanisation, etc. and of problems of water use and command area development.
