ABSTRACT
 Even though our technology has made a
tremendous improvement in our economy,,,,,,
 It had destroyed our nature by the side.
 In particular global warming which is a serious
problem caused due to these inventions..
 The paper describes some of the engineering
solutions to meet with these problems!!!!!
What is Global
Warming????
Global warming is the increase in the
ü
average temperature of the Earth's near-
surface air and oceans since the mid-
twentieth century and its projected
continuation. As the average temperature
increases the sea-level also rises which
had resulted in a huge shift in the climate
patterns.
 How is it caused?
Global warming is caused by several causes


such as
ü pollution from factories,
ü greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide in
the atmosphere.
ü the burning of coal, natural gasses and
fossil fuels
 Effects of Global
Warming
ü
ü Melting of ice caps in the North and South poles
resulting in rise of sea level.
ü occurrences of natural disasters, such as
hurricanes and tornadoes will increase. This will
in turn, cause mass destruction.
ü Coral reefs in the ocean will die as a result of the
increase in the temperature of the ocean.

How to overcome Global
Warming?


 Global warming can be addressed by

Carbon management.
 The main constraints to carbon
management are:
üLack of consumer awareness
üHigher initial costs for implementation of
newer technologies
üLack of industry incentives
üLack of effective policy



ü Technological advances, be it in areas of science or
engineering, are ultimately enabled by education,
awareness and, policy.
ü The carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas
emissions are increasing due to the increasing
energy demand as a result of industrial expansion
and increasing human population.
ü The technology aspects of carbon management can
be broadly classified into three areas:

Alternate Energy
Energy Efficiency


More efficient use of energy is another way to



conserve our renewable energy resources

Technological Advances
 Technological advances are advances in
science or engineering that can be applied
either on:
 existing systems
 new systems (for example, power plants)

 Clean coal technology
 Carbon capture and storage
(CCS).
1. CO2 pumped into disused coal fields
displaces methane which can be used as
fuel
2. CO2 can be pumped into and stored

safely in saline aquifers

3. CO2 pumped into oil fields helps

maintain pressure, making extraction

easier


Coal Washing

Coal washing involves grinding the coal into smaller

pieces and passing it through a process
called gravity separation
Coal Gasification

Coal burnt to produce syngas

2. Syngas burnt in combustor
3. Hot gas drives gas turbines
4. Cooling gas heats water
5. Steam drives steam turbines
REMOVING POLLUTANTS

Introduction of minute concentrations of Iron (Fe) into the
ocean (Iron fertilization) to promote the growth of
phytoplankton in the water.
 Increasing phytoplankton activity will:

ü decrease CO2 level from the atmosphere by means of

photosynthesis

photosynthesis, creating a bloom that other animals feed
upon.

If we don’t do anything to change our ways, global
sea levels may rise up to 20 feet making many
coastal areas uninhabitable. We have polluted our

suns rays cannot escape and our planet is heating up
We are already seeing changes to our environment.
There are more hurricanes, heat waves are more
frequent and more intense, droughts and wild fires
are occurring more often.
How to help stop Global
Warming?
 REDUCE

 The amount of energy you consume and start using renewable energy sources, such
as wind power and solar power. 

 REUSE

 By using products made with recycled materials.  Make or buy a compost

bin to use your organic waste as fertilizer for your trees, shrubs, and garden.

 RECYCLE

 All materials to your best ability in your local area and purchase Carbon
Offsets.

 What else can you do?

 Conclusion
vGlobal Warming is not Cool
vSome simple everyday changes can help. Use
energy efficient light bulbs and appliances.
Recycle. Ask your parent’s to use their car
less, walk or ride instead. Use public
transport. Buy electric hybrid cars. Offset
your carbon emissions. Use carbon offset
electricity.
vSpread the word.
