Introduction

A monolithic dome is a structure cast in a one-piece form. The form may be permanent or temporary and may or may not remain part of the finished structure.
Forms have been made using nearly every common structural material including air pressure supported fabric.

3. Polyurethane Foam Polyurethane foam is applied to the interior surface of the Airform. Entrance into the air-structure is made through a double door airlock which keeps the air-pressure inside at a constant level. Approximately three inches of foam is applied. The foam is also the base for attaching the steel reinforcing rebar.

GLOBAL VIPASSANA PAGODA, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Application of polyurethane Foam on the interior after the air pressure is maintained inside.

Foundation The Monolithic Dome starts as a concrete ring foundation, reinforced with steel rebar. Vertical steel bars embedded in the ring later attached to the steel reinforcing of the dome itself. Small domes may use an integrated floor/ring foundation. Otherwise, the floor is poured after completion of the dome. . Concrete Ring Base REINFORCEMENTS REBAR 5. Shotcrete Shotcrete a special spray mix of concrete is applied to the interior surface of the dome. The steel rebar is embedded in the concrete and when about three inches of shotcrete is applied, the Monolithic Dome is finished. The blower fans are shut off after the concrete is set.

The Global Vipassana Pagoda is a notable monument in Mumbai, India which serves for peace and harmony. The monument was inaugurated by Pratibha Patil, President of India on 8th February 2009. It is located in the North of Mumbai on a peninsula between Gorai Creek and the Arabian Sea. The Global Vipassana Pagoda was built out of gratitude to the Buddha, his teaching and the community of monks practicing his teaching.

Stone dressing for first Dome

Section of Domes

Stone blocks were dressed to have an interlocking shape, in order to grip one with another FOUNDATION 2. Airform An Airform fabricated to the proper shape and size is placed on the ring base. Using blower fans, it is inflated and the Airform creates the shape of the structure to be completed. The fans run throughout construction of the dome. Airform to provide required shape to the monolithic dome.

Vertical load transfer system: The tension hoop of the dome is replaced with a series of 36 Y-shaped buttresses that follow the line of thrust. The dome itself is a thin reinforced concrete shell structure, its exposed undersid illustrates an amazing geometry of concrete ribbing which provide a visual expression of the lines of force. The roof is an excellent example of transferring loads using membrane action.
