This Weeks Focus: Q2 Structural Analysis


It is important that you understand how the text is organised. You should think about what we see first (foregrounding) and why. Can you spot links between the language used and the image? The verb REINFORCES is useful here Are there changes in language across the text? JUXTAPOSITION How does the text conclude? For what effect?
Pre-read: Read the text and determine which parts of the text are actually useful to the question not all of the article will be relevant.

Q2: Always start with what is foregrounded (the first thing you see)

The title is foregrounded in this article. What does it give away? How can you still link it to the question though? What type of narration is it?

Intention of the Writer


Implies event is incomparable and emotional through adverb never. Declarative shows writers confidence /certainty. Writer emphasises the movement of the bear. The sibilance implies subtlety and despite its size is a hidden predatory creature.

Effect felt by the reader


Reader now expects a recount of something terrifying enough to have left a lasting impression. The bear is depicted as a relentless predator through the tripling. The sibilance implies the bear is calculated.

The writer immediately seeks to dismiss any preconceptions of the reader. Cuddly is replaced by metaphorical explosive

The reader becomes aware of the unpredictable nature of a creatures whose threat is hidden and not always obvious.

The writer deliberately selects facts on the bears weight and power to emphasise its potential threat. Machine is selected because it is emotionless and therefore remorseless.

The fact the bear is 70 stone is shocking and reinforces the metaphor machine. This also adds to the idea of a relentless, calculated predator.
