NEED OF ANALYSIS ON MASONRY BUILDINGS

In India more than 80% of the buildings are of masonry .
When they are subjected to earthquake loading their seismic assessment
becomes a challenge
Masonry structures are brittle, but the buildings need to be ductile to
withstand earthquake forces.
Most cases small scale buildings are constructed without any earthquake
resistivity and 80% of them are of masonry
Therefore the analysis on masonry buildings on earthquake resistance is
very vital.

NEED OF VULNERABILITY MAPPING
Helps to identify the geographical conditions of an area so that
proper disaster management techniques can be applied.

Knowing the type of construction, type of structures, nature of soil
are vital in determining the type of failure that can occur in an area

It helps to identify the nearest hospitals or health centers that can
be approached

Provide suggestions for future constructions.

It helps to predict the area where the buildings need to be
constructed with extra seismic resistance.

It helps to forecast the damage and cost of an earthquake in a
region.
MAP WINDOW
* It is an open source GIS software which we used
for mapping the vulnerability points on a map.

* Using map window we can geo reference the
map with the local latitudes and longitudes.

* Data we collected from field survey are fed in to
the software database

* With the help of its inbuilt query system we can
identify the points of interest easily

STRUCTURAL EVALUATION OF MASONRY
BUILDINGS
* LOCATION OF CENTRE OF MASS

* LOCATION OF CENTRE OF
RIGIDITY

* BASE SHEAR CALCULATION

* DISTRIBUTION OF SHEAR FORCE
INTO THE WALLS

LOCATION OF CENTRE OF MASS
Centre of mass is calculated by taking statistical moments
about a point, say lower left corner, using respective weights
of walls.

LOCATION OF CENTRE OF RIGIDITY
Centre of rigidity is calculated by taking statistical moments about a
point, say lower left corner using relative stiffness of walls in
respective direction considered.

BASE SHEAR CALCULATION
as per IS 1893 ( Part 1 ) : 2002 ,cl 7.5.3)

VB=Ah W
W=>seismic weight of building
Ah=>Design horizontal acceleration spectrum value=

Z=>Zone factor
I=Importance factor
R=Response reduction factor
Sa/g=>acceleration coefficient

DISTRIBUTION OF SHEAR FORCE INTO WALLS

Total SF = Direct SF + Torsional SF

Direct SF in X/Y direction= base shear in X/Y Relative Rigidity of wall

Torsional shear force in X direction=
