Impact in India

 If there is any revolution taking place in the Indian

online space, It is the rise of Social Networking
Sites.
 And this is quite evident from the comScore’s
recent report which said that in comparison to year
2007,there has been a 51% increase in the number
of visitors on such site by the end of 2008.
 This shows that Indian’s are too smitten by the
Social Networking bugs like all other part of the
world.
INDIANS LOVE ORKUT, BUT FACEBOOK IS
SOON CATCHING UP…..
 There is an explosion of users registering on the
popular social networking sites. Orkut boasts of
almost 12.8 Million users of Indian origin during
december ’08.
 Facebook, the world’s largest social networking site,
is at the number 2 spot with 4 million visitors from
India. However, the growth Facebook has seen
dwarfs even Orkut.
 Our very own homegrown SNS like minglebox,
bharatstudent.com, and yaari.com, has substantial
users.
 In nutshell ,the current scenario of social
networking in India is….
 Orkut tops the list of the most visited social
networking site with more than 12.8 million
visitors. This means an increase of 81 % from the

Why Orkut Getting Big???
 By nature Indians, believe in Catholic theory of
“Coming Together”. And we are inherently
conditioned to search for other like us. Social
Networking works out well for us in this regard
because its offers an interest based segregation
of individual.

 Another aspect is of us that Social networking

sites cleverly exploit is our over hinging on
nostalgia. We tend to magnify memories and
amplify times bygone.
 As the increases in popularity of social
networking is on constant rise, new uses for
the technology are constantly being observed.

 The major new trends are…

 Brand Building
 Direct Communication
 Exploit the niches
 Media and public relations
 Position you as an expert
 Low Cost

information like -age, gender, location, interests, and
perhaps a picture.

• An important difference between social networks and

online dating services is the fact that online dating sites
usually require a fee, where social networks are free,
which is the major reason for the growth of social
networking sites at the cost of online dating services.

growing concerns about user giving too much
personal information and the threat of sexual
predators.

• There is perceived privacy threat in relation to placing

too much personal information in the hand of large
corporation and governmental bodies.

• There is an issue over the control of data which may

be passed to the third party by the social networking
sites for eg.for the purpose of spamming.

• Citizens and government have been
concerned by a misuse by child and
teenagers of social network services
particularly in relation to online
sexual predators.
Scams And Harassment
• The relative freedom afforded by social
networking services has caused concern
regarding the potential of its misuse by
individual patrons.
for eg.online scams, identity theft.
Time Consuming
• Social Networking Sites are flooded with lots of
applications and people just wandered from
one application to other.

• That’s why many people considered social

networking sites time consuming because with
