PURPOSE OF FORM 2290
IRS Form 2290 is meant to send information about the usage of a
commercial truck and to pay taxes on that use to the IRS. You can use
this form for a single truck filing or up to twenty-five vehicles can be
reported on one form.

The major reasons for filing the form include:
Calculating and paying the taxes owed on Heavy Vehicle Use Tax
Claiming a suspension of the tax for vehicles driven less than 5,000
miles during the applicable period (or 7,500 miles if agricultural use)
Claiming a credit for a sold, stolen or destroyed vehicle.


WHO MUST FILE FORM 2290?
Any business owner or a tax professional can file form 2290.You may be
an individual, limited liability company (LLC), corporation, partnership, or
any other type of organization (including nonprofit, charitable,
educational, etc.)

The tax period for 2014 of Form 2290 begins on July 1, 2014, and ends
on June 30, 2015.

If a taxable highway motor vehicle (defined below) is registered, or
required to be registered, in your name under state, District of Columbia,
Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first use during the period
and the vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more are taxable

This type of amendment is filed if the taxable gross weight of a vehicle
increases during the period and the vehicle falls in a new higher
category. For instance, an increase in maximum load customarily carried
may change the taxable gross weight.

WHEN TO FILE?
Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes must be filed using the Form 2290 on an
annual basis. The Tax period for Heavy Vehicles begins on July 1st and
ends on June 30th of the following year. The annual renewal of your
Form 2290 for a new tax period IS DUE BY August 31st each year.

For new vehicles placed in service, the IRS Form 2290 must be filed by
the last day of the month following the month of first use. For example, if
you purchase and first use a vehicle in October, you must file a Form
2290 by the end of November.

HOW TO FILE FORM 2290?
ELECTRONICALLY FILING:

File Form 2290 electronically through any electronic return
originator (ERO), transmitter, and/or intermediate service
provider (ISP) participating in the IRS e-file program for
excise taxes, such as ExpressTruckTax.com.
E-Filing 2290 is required by the IRS, if you are reporting 25
or more trucks on a return.

PAPER FILING
Mail Form 2290 to the address shown under Where to File.
If you did not pay the tax using the Electronic Funds
Transfer or Electronic Federal Tax Payment System
(EFTPS), mail Form 2290-V and your check or money order
with Form 2290.

PENALTIES AND INTEREST


If you receive a IRS penalty for filing your return late or paying your tax
late and believe you have reasonable cause for doing so, send a letter
to the IRS explaining why you believe you have reasonable cause for
filing late or paying late.

Do not attach an explanation when you file your return.

EMPLOYER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER(EIN)
The IRS requires ANY taxpayer filing a Form 2290 to use an EIN or
Employer Identification Number when filing. The IRS expressly prohibits
the use of social security numbers for the filing of 2290.

Remember, the due date to file your Form 2290 for vehicles first placed
on public highways in November is December 31, 2014. While you can
get your EIN immediately, it can take the IRS up to 10 business days
to update new EINs into their system. You cannot E-File your Form 2290
until your EIN is the system, so you will want to get your EIN today to
ensure you can file by the deadline.

VIN CORRECTION
The 2290 VIN correction would need to be filed if an error was made on
the 2290 when entering the 17 character Vehicle Identification Number.

authorization applies only to the tax return on which it appears.

designee to answer any questions relating to the information reported on
Form 2290.
