UNDERPINNING

Bored Pile
Bored Pile
Bored pile is a type of reinforced concrete pile which is used
to support high building which has heavy vertical load.
It is a cast-in-place concrete pile where the bored piles have
to be cast on construction site, while other concrete piles
like Spun Pile and Reinforced Concrete Square Pile are
precast concrete pile which are cast in the factory.
Normally bored piling is carried out on those tall buildings
which require foundations which bear the load of thousands
of tons, most probably in unstable or difficult soil conditions.
Bored piling is cast by using bored piling machine which has
specially designed drilling tools, buckets and grabs. It is used
to remove the soil and rock. Normally it can be drilled into 50
metre depth of soil.

Bored Pile (contd)
The advantage of bored piling is its drilling method has a little vibration and
lower noise level.
The drilling method is depending on the condition of soil. Piling contractor
has to do soil investigation and decide which drilling technology has to be
carried on.
Piling contractor has to choose the correct drilling technology and minimize
disturbance of the surrounding soil. For cohesionless soils such as sands,
gravels, silts and others, whether its under the water table or not, the pile
bore hole must be supported using steel casing or stabilizing muds such as
bentonite suspension. A
After that, reinforcement bar will be placed into the bore hole and concrete
will be poured into the bore hole.
Bore Pile Underpinning
A method of construction that includes excavation, steel casing,
reinforcement and concrete works.
It is a suitable method to replace any existing foundation with
piling.
Bore pile is the most suitable pile for underpinning because piling
rig can be use in small and limited space, especially under existing
foundation.
It is done by stages.
Underpinning works is quiet and does not produce a lot of
vibration.
Best diameter pile for underpinning work is 300mm 950mm.

SEQUENCE WORKS FOR BORE PILE
UNDERPINNING

1. Excavation work is done bay by bay for strip foundation, while excavation under
existing foundation is for pad foundation.

2. Rig pile is located in working space
where it functions as a pit excavator.
3. Steel casing is used to prevent soil from fall and fill the
excavation pit
4. Reinforcement is arranged in the
excavation pit in a suitable depth and
concrete is poured.

5. Vibrator is used to release the air and the
steel casing is brought out one by one.

6. The pile with toothing around is the best
bored pile as it helps pile to bond strongly
and neatly with the soil.
7. To support the pile, it is better to make the
lower part of the bore pile bigger than usual.
