Desalters

Purpose:
To remove salts present in the crude oil.
To remove undesirable impurities like sand, mud, corrosion by
products.
Benefits:
Less corrosion in heat exchangers and columns.
Less plugging, scaling, coking of exchangers and furnace tubes.
Better corrosion control in CDU Overhead.
Less erosion by solids in Control Valves, exchangers, furnace and
pumps.

Desalter Operating Principle

Principle:
Crude Oil contains water varying from 0.1-0.5 volume %.

Soluble salts are present in the crude oil dissolved in water.

Dissolved water is present in the form of emulsion (dispersed as very small
droplets).

Additional water is injected for formation larger droplets to enhance quicker
settling.

Electric Field is applied to further reduce the settling time.

1. The tube metal temperature at the cold end of Cast Air Preheater shall be
maintained at least 15C above dew point of flue gas.
2. The pressure drop across the Air Pre-heater shall be regularly monitored on flue
gas side as well as air side. The pressure drop is basically a measure of flue gas /
air flow through Air Pre-heater and fouling of Air Pre-heater.
3. The oxygen content in the flue gas at inlet and outlet of Air Pre-heater shall be
monitored regularly as this would be measured of air leakage into flue gas from
air.
4. The flue gas temperature between Cast and Glass Air Preheater shall not exceed
240C.
