Kits Functionality
Syed Umar Anis
June - 2014
Overview
Kit functionality allows us to create item that
has components
Both kit and its components are defined in
Item Master application as regular Items
Inventory application allows us to assemble or
disassemble kits. This automatically adjusts
the current inventory balance for kit and its
components

HOW TO CREATE A KIT
Item Number Description
TST1111111 Computer Case, CPU, Motherboard
TST2222222 Computer Mouse
TST3333333 Computer Keyboard
TST4444444 Computer Monitor
Item Number Description
TST8888888 Desktop PC
Consider the following items defined in Maximo Item Master
As the above items are components of desktop PC, we can define a new item
called Desktop PC and link above items as components using kit functionality.
Create Kit Item
Link Components with Kit Item
Specify Item Assembly Structure
HOW TO ASSEMBLE KIT
Add the Kit Item and its components to a store
When you add a kit item to store, kit components
are automatically added
Lets assume the components already have
balances as shown

MyStore
Open the Kit item in Inventory application and
select Assemble Kit from Select Action menu
Assemble Kit dialog shows the possible quantity
that can be assembled
Let assemble 3 kits
Kit quantity increases to 3 after assembling.
Balances of components are reduced
accordingly.
HOW TO DISASSEMBLE KIT
Open Kit item in Inventory application and
choose Disassemble Kit from Select Action
menu.
Lets disassemble 1 kit out of the 3 available
Kit quantity is now down to 2 after disassembling
Components quantities are increased accordingly
FUNCTIONAL DETAILS
Kit in Item Master
An item could be part of more than one kits
A kit component can itself be a kit, allowing
multiple level of composition
A kit item cannot be condition enabled or
rotating
When you add a kit item to store, kit
components are automatically added

Kit in Inventory
Inventory application has the Assemble Kit / Disassemble
Kit actions (explained earlier)
Financial transactions are generated when kit is assembled
or disassembled
Average cost of the items are also affected
With kits, there could be a potential issue in determining
the right balance of items. Inventory application will not
show the aggregate current balance of a component. If kit
is assembled, balance will not show up on components.
For example, inventory might show that there is no Keyboard
available, but it might be available as part of assembled Desktop
PC.
This is a reasonable behavior that requires clarification and
emphasis while implementation.

Procuring Kits
Both kit and its components can be purchased
as both are regular Maximo items with their
own description, specification etc.
Specifying a kit items on Purchase Requisition
or Purchase Order will not include any details
about the assembly structure / components
automatically.
