Blood

Mystery?
A Spy was recently captured and
locked in a room for interrogation. She
was searched for weapons and
handcuffed to a chair. Hours later, she
was found dead, with a broken tooth
on the floor. The tooth was a fake!
Symptoms:
Skin is pinkish/red
Mouth smells of burnt almonds
What is in blood?
Blood is made up of 4 different major
components

Red Blood Cells (RBC) Specially designed to
carry Oxygen (in Haemoglobin) from the lungs
and release them to body cells

White Blood Cells Help with immune functions

Platelet Allows for clotting when there is an
open wound.

Plasma is the fluid portion of the blood
What makes the RBC important?
The primary function of the blood is
the transport of Oxygen

Each RBC contains a special
molecule called Haemoglobin

Haemoglobin is an Iron containing
molecule that has a strong affinity
(ability to bond) for Oxygen

Haemoglobin
It also contains a special binding site
for Carbon Dioxide. Important for Gas
Exchange!

Haemoglobins bind to Oxygen is not
tight or perfect, other molecules can
take Oxygens place

If the surrounding tissue is low in
Oxygen, they can suck Oxygen off of
Haemoglobin

Haemoglobin
Only of the Oxygen is taken from
Haemoglobin, the other stays in the
blood which provides our body with a
huge reserve supply

Haemoglobin allows the blood to carry
70 times more oxygen
Two other major components of
blood
Leukocytes
These are the White Blood cells of the
body. There are a series of different ones,
each of them are specialised to perform
different functions that defend our body from
infection.

These Cells make up less than 1% of our
blood. They are heavily concentrated in
certain areas of our body.

Pus forms when a leukocyte has dissolved a
pathogen (invader).

Platelets
These are irregularly shaped cells

They are crucial for clot formation, they help our
wounds heal and ensure that we do not bleed to
death

They sense when damage is done to vascular
structures and activate, they bind immediately
to the area of damage and block the wound, thus
preventing blood loss

How everything ties together so
far

- Digestive system provides a flow of
nutrients for the body as well as an
excretion route for waste

- Circulation allows for the transport of
all nutrients, waste, and gas
throughout the body
