Introduction to Petroleum
Geochemistry
It is a branch of geochemistry to resolve
the problems of petroleum geology

Historically, it started as early as in 1936
and now it is further specialized into
Exploration, Development & Production.

Introduction to Petroleum
Geochemistry
Exploration Geochemistry
1. Characterizing charge risk
2. Using oil bio-markers in exploration
3. Using Basin modeling to reduce risk
4. Origin of light oil and condensate
5. Reservoir alteration of oil
Introduction to Petroleum
Geochemistry
Development Geochemistry
1. Using oil geochemistry to predict vertical
and lateral variations of oil.
2. Assessing reservoir compartmentalization.
3. Water geochemistry of oil field brines.
4. Solid bitumen in reservoirs.
Introduction to Petroleum
Geochemistry
Production geochemistry
1. Monitoring reservoir floods.
2. Allocating comingled production.
3. Identifying completion problems (Tubing
leak, poor cementation etc).
4. Preventing sludge, asphaltene or mineral
scale deposition
