TEN-T CNC Rhine-Danube - Overview on IWW infrastructure
Main +
Main-Danube Canal

Compliance with ECMT waterway class IV:
Length of vessels and barges: from 80-85m
Maximum beam: from 9.50m
Minimum draught: from 2.50m
Tonnage: from 1000 1500t
Minimum height under bridges: from 5.25 / 7.00 m (2 layer
resp. 3 layer container transport)
Preservation of good navigational status
Equipment with River Information Services
Availability of alternative clean fuels (for core ports only)

Transport infrastructure requirements for IWW
(TEN-T Guidelines, Article 15 and 39)

Inland waterways

Free-flowing sections
Low ECMT class (< IV)
Low bridge clearance (< 5,25 m)
Straubing - Vilshofen
Inland waterways with critical infrastructure conditions
Melk-Krems
Wien - Devin
Sap - Szob
Sap Mohacs port / Batina
Batina - Beograd
Portil de fier II - Sulina
Sava

especially in free-flowing
sections a draught of 2.5 m
throughout the year is hardly
met, even the provision of
2.5 m fairway depths on 240
days on average per year is
challenging for some sections

River Sava is partly Class III
low bridge clearance at the rail and road bridge in Auheim, the road bridge Alte Mainbrcke
Wrzburg (arch bridge), the rail bridge Bogen and the Margit-hd in Budapest (arch bridge).

Information
Continuous change in the morphology of the
riverbed, either in the form of sedimentation or
erosion.

Fairway maintenance - identification of needs
Needs assessment by
refined by
Fairway Maintenance Masterplan
- Draft for SG Meeting in May 2014

Final version expected by July
2014
Preliminary results:
equipment is lacking in several countries
particularly demand of equipment for the execution of dredging works, for
marking the fairway and for surveying the riverbed regularly
Low investment costs and small increase in operational costs with high
effect on the inland waterway transport

Current status and outlook for RIS deployment
Minimum requirements of the RIS Directive are on the way of being
achieved.
Deployment beyond the minimum requirements depends on
national priorities
Development potential
o national and international data exchange
o electronic reporting of cargo and voyage data
o one-stop-shop for electronic reporting could be envisaged
Quality of Service parameters are developed within IRIS Europe 3.
Stable conditions for the RIS operation need to be ensured (shortage
of qualified staff, lack of budgets for RIS operation)
Some systems need to be replaced as of 2014-2020
