HUMAN VALUES

WHEN APPLIED IN HEALTH CARE

PROMOTES BETTER HEALTH
The Sathya Sai Education in Human Values
program rests on the five pillars of Truth,
Right-Action, Peace, Love and Non-Violence.
The spiritual principles embedded within
these values are the foundations of true
humanness.
We gain a deeper
understanding of Truth by
developing:

Honesty
Self-reflection
Discrimination
Integrity.
TRUTH
(Sathya)
We experience Right Action
through the sub-values:

Self-confidence
Forbearance
Responsibility
Good manners
Other social skills.
RIGHT ACTION
(Dharma )

We experience Peace as
we gain emotional
equilibrium through:

Self-acceptance
Optimism
Patience
Contentment
Humility
PEACE
( Shanthi)
We develop:

Compassion
Sharing
Tolerance
Friendship
Sacrifice
LOVE
( Prema)
as we discover that Love is not mere emotion,
but the force that permeates all creation.
NON VIOLENCE
( Ahimsa)
We learn that true Non-Violence
is not harming anything, living
and/or nonliving, in thought
word or deed. It encompasses:
Cooperation
Respect for diversity
Ecological balance
The unity of life.
Truth : Fulfils the quest of the intellect
Right : Here the Will is channeled towards
Action a satisfying expression
Peace : Resolves conflicts of human emotions
and interactions Life of Harmony
Love : Opens up the Heart to receive the
Divine Energy and lets it flow freely
Non- : Brings perfect sympathy for all creation
Violence
LOVE IS THE UNDERCURRENT
(of All Values)
LOVE IS GOD

Love as Thought is Truth
Love as Action is Right-Conduct
Love as Feeling is Peace
Love as Understanding in Non-Violence
Sathya Sai Human Values Program
Fosters the ability to live happily, without
making others unhappy
Evaluates things, pleasure, and possessions
correctly and without prejudice
A values-based life is clearly vital for a Healthy
and productive Life, given the vicious cycle of
war, anger, intolerance, greed, and so many other
displays of man's inhumanity to man.
There is no right way to
do a wrong thing.
There is no pillow as soft
as a clear conscience.

HIPPOCRATIC OATH

The Hippocratic Oath, a seminal
document on the ethics of medical
practice, was attributed to Hippocrates
in antiquity. This is probably the most
famous document of the Hippocratic
Corpus. Recently the authenticity of
the document has come under
scrutiny. While the Oath is rarely used
in its original form today, it serves as a
foundation for other, similar oaths and
laws that define good medical practice
and morals. Such derivatives are
regularly taken today by medical
graduates about to enter medical
practice.

Health-Care is Integral and Holistic
if it also focuses on:

Preservation of Health
Prevention of Disease

not just curing bodily disease.
Health should include the fourth dimension:
SPIRITUAL WELL BEING
WHO brought in a resolution in 1983 to include
the Spiritual dimension of health, but it was not
until 1998 the Executive Board of the WHO
accepted the suggested amendment to the
Constitution:
Health is a dynamic state of complete physical,
mental, spiritual and social wellbeing, and not
merely absence of disease or infirmity.
Disease in its origin is not matter, but the
ultimate product of deep seated and long
acting forces. Therefore, treatment at the
material plane (body) alone cannot effect a
complete healing.

Without surrendering to a Higher-Power,
humanity will be plagued with anxiety and
depression, the biggest contributor to disease.
Medical education today has become increasingly
self-centred, de-humanised and fragmented. There
is too much emphasis on academic performance,
and acquisition of technical skills.

As a result we are:
Developing a manipulative intelligence
Not exercising proper discrimination
Misusing human and natural resources
Not enabling patients to tap their own inner
resources to fulfil their aspirations.
There isnt yet any serious attempt to
incorporate basic spiritual teaching in the
undergraduate and post-graduate training of
doctors. Of course it will demand an
enormous turn around from the current
entrenched position of a secular and
mechanistic view on human sciences.
Sectarian beliefs compound the problem
further, and it would be a formidable task
to overcome such vested interests in
Scientific, Religious, Commercial, Legal
and Political domains that seek control.
Globalisation: Proper Medical Relief should be
made available to the sick. It is the birthright of all
people.

De-commercialisation: Medical relief should not
be beyond the means of any human being.

Humanisation: All Health-Care workers should
have a 'humane' approach in patient-care and
practise 'Human Values'.

Spiritualisation: Those involved in Patient-care
must know of the Spiritual Dimension in Man
and try to incorporate the same in the practice of
Healing.
We need to re-educate ourselves that we
are spiritual beings, with a body, mind
and spirit - Not just biological machines.
Mere material science of treating bodily
afflictions is incomplete, without
understanding the sublime science of
Mind & Spirit, Birth, Life and Death.
Our attention is limited to the body and
not able to see the person in the patient!
Science of Medicine can be taught, but the
Art of Healing is learned only by practise.
The art of healing is handed down by
experienced practitioners, not books!

In the materialistic, high-tech environment,
intimidated by medico-legal constraints and
peer pressure, the doctor has to work hard to
keep the body alive, oblivious of the suffering
of the patient within.

Death is only casting aside the body!
Quality of life is important - Not Quantity
The cult of greed has not only bankrupted
our economy but also is destroying every bit
of compassion .

. leading to the frightening mess we are
making, even with the dying, where
patients die hidden away in hospitals in the
cold company of machines.
Heart of Compassion
Spirituality kindles a spontaneous
and sympathetic feeling in the
doctor and enables him to treat
his patient as he would his kith
and kin.
The inter-relationship of the
healer and the healed can be fully
understood only through
Spiritual Awareness.
There exists a sacred bond between the
doctor and the patient.
Lack of love, excessive and unrelenting pain,
fear and such negative experiences weaken
the spirit and consequently the body.
Tender Loving Care (T.L.C) gives confidence
to the patient and strengthens his spirit and
thereby his will to recover.
Disease in its origin is not matter, but the
ultimate product of deep seated and long
acting forces. Therefore, treatment at the
material plane (body) alone cannot effect a
complete healing.

Without surrendering to a Higher-Power,
humanity will be plagued with anxiety and
depression, the biggest contributor to disease.
Altruistic qualities

Selfless love, joy, calmness, trust, courage,
humility, giving happiness to others, etc. -
strengthen the immune system with a rise in
CD4 T cells, thus improving health. There is
also an increase in encephalins and
endorphins.
All the opposites The Negativities:

Apathy, irritability, anxiety, depression,
suicidal thoughts, jealousy, hatred, envy -
affect ones own well being and the CD4 T
cells show a sharp downturn.
Health is in our hands !
Health requires an evolved mind
Selfish goals are injurious to the individual
especially when they are at the expense of
others
Competitiveness, rivalry, violence,
pettiness, jealousy, hatred and a whole
hoard of negative activities - criticising,
comparing, calculating, worrying,
imagining and so on.
These lead to mental and physical
disturbances and consequently diseases.
Mind When we dont know something,
our ignorance is bliss; we are not affected
by it. But, when we know of something, it
will affect us.

Mental Attitude - A change is possible
through a change in Educational System.
Instead of limiting Education to only an External,
Intellect-based, Objective Education, we also need
to give our students an Internal, Intuition-based,
Subjective and Transformation Education.
Thus the secular knowledge and skills gained by
them will have added value we would then
Skill such knowledge.
Mere Objective knowledge will Kill it.
Nature of the Subconscious Mind
It is like an Iceberg It can sink anything
Sathya Sai Baba says:
Education must teach a person how to live life
as a true human being.
It must purify the heart and clarify the vision.
It must prevent pollution of the head, heart and
hand, caused by habits injurious to the
individual, the society and the nation.
It must promote virtues and raise the moral and
spiritual standards of mankind.
Without Human Values
Mind in Unease - Body in Disease
