PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION RECORD
WHAT IS PQR
PQR is very first step to start any production
welding.
PQR is record of the welding details used to weld
a test coupon.
It also contains the test result of the tested
specimen.

PURPOSE OF PQR
The main purpose of PQR is to determine that the
weldment proposed for construction is capable of
providing the required properties for its intended
application.
The completed PQR shall document all essential and
when required supplementary essential variables for each
welding process used for welding the test coupon.
Non-essential or other variables used during the welding
of the test coupon may be recorded at the manufacturings
option.
TYPES OF VARIABLE
Essential variable: a change in welding condition,
which will affect the mechanical properties of the
weldment.
Non-essential variable:a change in a welding
condition that will not affect the mechanical properties of
weldment.
Supplemental essential variable:a change in welding
condition that will affect the notch-toughness properties
of a weldment.
ESSENTIAL VARIABLE
P.NO: to reduce the number of welding procedure
qualification required, base metal have been assigned p-
number. For ferrous base metal, which have specified
impact test requirements,different group number within p-
number has been given
A no.: it is used to identified the weld metal chemical
composition designated on PQR and WPS.
F no.: the f-number is grouping of electrode and welding
rods based on their usability characteristics, which
fundamentally determine the ability of welder to make
satisfactory weld a with given filler metal. .
CONSUMABLE
BATCH TESTING
INTRODUCTION
All welding consumable for SMAW,GTAW, GMAW,
FCAW, SAW,etc.shall be tested by welding engineering
department at the time of receipt in Hazira.
This will be applicable to all local, imported and customer
supplied welding consumable coming directly from the
manufacture/customer to Hazira works.
PROCEDURE
A sample packet of electrodes shall be sent for each
batch/size to welding engineering department along with
a test report for welding materials manufactures tests
certificate P.O. & GRN by HZMS. Running
characteristics & restrained fillet test requirements may
be waived off for the following reputed brands of SMAW
electrodes.receipt of the sample packet from HZMS the
following shall be checked immediately.the batch no. on
the packed should tally with the batch no. in the test
report.
RUNNING CHARACTERISTIC
The test for running characteristics will be combined with
restrained fillet test.
Stainless steel electrodes also be 3F position for its
running characteristics .welding engineering to decided
periodicity of the check depending upon supplier and size
of electrodes.
RESTRAINED FILLET TEST
Any assembly consisting of the three flats shall be made
before carrying out welding the electrodes shall be dried
as follows.
Welding should be carried out with current 5-10 amps.
More than the maximum than specified by manufacturing
on the packed of electrodes which are being tested.
this will be applicable for <=2.4mm DIA electrodes for
other sizes current level to be used on maximum side of
the range.

SHOP WELD PLAN
Welding engineering department issues shop
weld plan to Planning, Shop floor where actual job is
going on.

The name self indicate that it is a welding plan of
actual job vessel and it guides to shop floor
supervisor and welder that which WPS/PQR shall use
for particular seam.

TEST PLAN
Welding engineering department issues test plan
to planning, NDT, and shop floor for a particular job,
which is under production.

In testing plan list of test for particular seam
number is given with reference of ASME and
customer specification and also given detail of
production weld test coupon such as type of testing
(destructive & Non destructive), quantity thickness,
For which seam no. Required the PTC that is also
described.

PQR
The main purpose of PQR is to determine that the
weldment proposed for construction is capable of
providing the required properties for its intended
application.
The PQR lists what was used in qualifying the WPS
and the test result.
The completed PQR shall document all essential and
when required, supplementary essential variables for each
welding process used for welding the test coupon. Non-
essential or other variables used during the welding of the
test coupon may be recorded at the manufactures option.

WPS
CONTENTS OF THE WPS:

WPS shall describe the entire essential, nonessential, and when
required, supplementary essential variables for each welding process
used in the WPS.

The WPS shall reference the supporting PQR.

The manufacturer may include any other information in the WPS
that may be helpful in making a code weldment.
