Introduction
Direct Method, sometimes also called natural
method, is a method for teaching foreign languages.
Ive choose this method because I think it is a good
form to teach children in Englishs classes.
This method has been established in the classes of
many countries, as for example in Germany and
France.
The Direct Method
Direct Method is based on the premise that second
language learning should be very similar to first
language learning in terms of interaction. The
spontaneous use of the second language and no use of
translation or analysis of grammatical rules.

With this method children just use the target language
in the class. Characteristic features of the direct method
are teaching vocabulary through tales, realia and other
visuals teaching grammar by using an inductive
approach.

The Direct Method
Methods characteristics
Richards and Rodgers summarize the major characteristics
of this method:

1. Classroom interaction are conduced exclusively in the
target language.
2. Oral communication skills were built up in a carefully
graded progression organized around question-and-
answer exchanges between teachers and students in
small, intensive classes.

Methods characteristics

3. Grammar is taught inductively.
4. Only everyday vocabulary and sentences are
taught.
5. New teaching points are introduced orally.
6. Concrete vocabulary is taught through
demonstration, objects and pictures; abstract
vocabulary is taught by association of ideas.

Methods characteristics
7. Both speech and listening comprehension are
taught.
8. Correct pronunciation and grammar are
emphasized.
9. Student should be speaking at least 80% of the
time during the lesson.
10. Students are taught from inception to ask
questions as well as answer them.

The teacher
In this widely-used method, teachers were normally
native-speakers of the Second Language.
The method has been criticized for its weak
theoretical basis and the distorted relationship
between first and second language.
Conclusion
We can use many methods to teach a foreign language. Direct method is
one of them and I think is very good because it consist in a complete
linguistic immersion. But teaching English we also have to take into
account other things:
We must be passionate about teaching, and patient, adapting to the
level of the students because they have individual needs.
We can be strict, but as well we should be friendly, energy, interesting
and funny. Have an original teaching style.
We should teach grammar clearly, not rely on the course book only.
Help students make progress.
Be kind. Not show a distance.
Be stimulating. We can know the student names and know them.

They are the most important!
