TECHNIQUES of DRUG
ADMINISTRATION
A drug may be administered by
mouth (orally) or through the skin
(parenterally).

Parenteral methods include: injection
into a vein (intravenously); into a
muscle (intramuscularly); under the
skin (subcutaneously).


The injection techniques based on the sites of injection:
1. IV (intravenous): injection into the vein

DOSAGE/DOSE
Drug is chemical or other substance that alters the
function of an organism. Such chemicals are used
for the prevention, treatment, and alleviation of
disease. The term medicine (such as in
prescription-only medicine) is sometimes used to
distinguish therapeutic drugs from recreational and
other drugs, such as opiates, which are used
illegally.
A dose is a quantity of a chemical, physical or
biological agent that impacts a biological entity. In
medicine, the term is usually applied to a deliberate
exposure to an agent for therapeutic purposes; in
toxicology it may refer to the amount of a harmful
agent to which something is exposed. A dose is
related to exposure of an organism to the agent.

INDICATION & CONTRA INDICATION
When doctors are considering which drug to
prescribe, they need to consider both indications
and contraindications.
Indications are medical conditions where the drug
should be given.
Contraindications are medical conditions where the
drug should not be given, or where there is
hypersensitivity to that drug. If the patient is
pregnant, the doctor must consider whether the drug
could be passed to the fetus. The doctor must also
find out what other drugs the patient may be taking,
including over-the-counter drugs. This is because
many drugs have adverse side-effects through
interactions with other drugs, foods or alcohol.

PREPARING THE SYRINGE and VIAL
Check the prescription (medicine and dose)
Collect all instruments and supplies
Check the syringe by pulling and pushing the plunger
Remove the soft metal (plastic cap) protecting the
rubber stopper of the vial.
Clean the rubber stopper with alcohol cotton (swab)
for sterilization
Remove the needle cap.
Insert the needle into the vial.
Invert the vial and pull the plunger to withdraw the
medicine as prescribed dose
Take out the needle from the vial when finished. Put
on the needle cap
Bring all instruments and supplies to the patient

Case: A doctor orders you to give an antibiotic injection to a newly
hospitalized patient diagnosed with appendicitis.
Nurse gives:
