Greenhouse Effect

The phenomenon whereby the earth's

atmosphere traps solar radiation, caused by
the presence in the atmosphere of gases such
as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and methane
that allow incoming sunlight to pass
through but absorb heat radiated back from
the earth's surface.
Causes Of greenhouse effect
Water vapour
Carbon dioxide
Methane
Chlorofluorocarbons(CFC)
Water Vapour
Water vapour is the most potent of the
greenhouse gases in Earths atmosphere, but
its behaviour is fundamentally different
from that of the other greenhouse gases. The
primary role of water vapour is not as a
direct agent of radiative forcing but rather
as a climate feedbackthat is, as a response
within the climate system that influences
the systems continued activity.
back
Carbon dioxide
The presence of the gas in the atmosphere
keeps some of the radiant energy received by
the Earth from being returned to space, thus
producing the so-called greenhouse effect.
back
Methane
colourless, odourless gas that occurs
abundantly in nature as the chief
constituent of natural gas, as a component
of firedamp in coal mines, and as a product
of the anaerobic bacterial decomposition of
vegetable matter under water .

CFC
are the main cause of stratospheric ozone
depletion.
The CFCs drift up to the stratosphere, an
upper layer of the atmosphere where strong
ultraviolet radiation from the Sun breaks
them down. As they break down, they release
chlorine, which depletes the protective ozone
layer. A single chlorine atom can destroy
over 100,000 ozone molecules.

Consequences of global warming
Drought and Wildfire
Warmer temperatures could increase the probability of drought. Greater evaporation,
particularly during summer and fall, could exacerbate drought conditions and increase
the risk of wildfires.
Deadly Heat Waves
More frequent and severe heat waves will result in a greater number of heat-related deaths.
Note:Hotter weather enables deadly mosquitoes to travel greater distances; carbon dioxide
in the air aggravates asthma and allergies.
Ecosystem Shifts and Species Die-Off
Increasing global temperatures are expected to disrupt ecosystems, pushing to extinction
those species that cannot adapt. The first comprehensive assessment of the extinction risk
from global warming found that more than 1 million species could be obliterated by 2050
if the current trajectory continues. Note:
Deceases
skin cancer
cataracts of the eye
suppression of the immune system

Simple ways prevent to global
warming
Drive less. Take bikes, walk or carpool
whenever possible.
Consider investing in a hybrid or electric
vehicle to help prevent against further global
warming.
Replace all the lightbulbs in and around
your home with energy-efficient fluorescents
that use fewer watts for the same amount of
light.

Unplug electronics when they are not in use,
because they still take up energy. At the very
least, turn items off when theyre not being
used.
Buy recycled paper products and recycle as
much of your waste as possible.
Bring your own reusable canvas grocery
bags when grocery shopping.
Plant a tree.

Use nontoxic cleaning products.
Shop locally for food. A farmers market is
an excellent place to visit. And choose fresh
food over frozen foods. Fresh takes less
energy to produce.
Keep your car tuned up, and check tire
pressure often to save gas.
