Cell Theory
Robert Hooke
1. 1665- English Scientist, Robert
Hooke, discovered cells while
looking at a thin slice of cork.
2. He described the cells as tiny
boxes or a honeycomb.
3. He thought that cells only
existed in plants and fungi.

Anton van Leuwenhoek
4. 1673- Used a handmade
microscope to observe pond scum &
discovered single-celled organisms.
5. He called them animalcules.
6. He also observed blood cells from
fish, birds, frogs, dogs, and humans.
7. Therefore, it was known that cells
are found in animals as well as
plants.

Other Scientists
8. Matthias Schleiden
All plants are made of
cells.
9. Theodor Schwann
All animals are made of
cells.
10. Rudolf Virchow
All new cells arise only
from existing cells.

Cell Theory
11.
a)All living things are composed
of cells
b)Cells are the basic unit of
structure and function in
living things
c)New cells are produced from
existing cells
Exceptions:

12. Mitochondria and
chloroplasts (contain own DNA,
and self-replicate)

13. Viruses (DNA surrounded
by protein coat)

14. Write 7 facts on your note-sheet you learn from this video.
Cell Types
Prokaryote
15.
a) Small cells
b) Unicellular
c) No nucleus or mitochondria
d) Binary fission (cell division)

Eukaryote
16.

a) Larger than prokaryote
b) Multicellular
c) Nucleus and mitochondria
d) Mitosis or meiosis (cell
division)

Plant Cell
Organelles-Function in the Cell
the parts that make up the cell (similar to organs in body)
17. Cell Wall-Protection
a) Cell walls are made of specialized sugars
called cellulose. Cellulose provides a protected
framework for a plant cell to survive.
b) Cell walls also help a plant keep its shape.

c) While they do protect the cells, cell walls and
cellulose also allow plants to grow to great
heights. (like a skeleton)
18. Cell Membrane-Protection/Waste
Removal
Separates cell interior from environment, and
controls movement of materials into and out of cell (like skin)

a)Maintain homeostasis
b)Selectively permeable membrane (semi-permeable)
c)Composed of lipids and proteins (phospholipids bilayer)

19. Cytoplasm-Protection
a) the space between the nucleus and cell
membrane
b) Liquid goo
20. Nucleus-Nervous System

a) Large, round, dense
b) Surrounded by membrane
(nuclear membrane or envelope)
c) Control center of the cell
d) Contains genetic information
(DNA)
21. Mitochondria-Energy/Digestion
a) Produces ATP (Cells energy source)
b) powerhouse of the cell

Vacuole-Storage
a) Fluid filled Organelles
b) Enclosed by a membrane
c) Types
i. Food Vacuole
ii.Contractile Vacuole
iii.Central Vacuole
23. Chloroplasts-Energy
a)Site of photosynthesis (in plants)
b)Food making process
c)Present in some protists and plants

Pre-Ap
24. Endoplasmic Reticulum-Smooth
a) Transports proteins to the rest
of the cell.
b) Acts as a highway for proteins.
25. Endoplasmic Reticulum-Rough
a) Covered with ribosomes
b) Found near the nucleus
c) Acts as a highway for proteins
Pre-AP
26. Ribosome
a) Produce proteins for the cell.
b) Smallest organelle

27. Lysosome
a) Vesicles that contain enzymes
b) Destroy worn out or damaged
organelles
c) Get rid of wastes and protect
cell from foreign invaders
Pre-AP
28. Nucleolus
a) Found inside the nucleus
b) Contains the material to make
ribosomes
29. Golgi Body
a) Package proteins for transport
to the rest of the cell
